“He can do much more with Trey Lance than… ,” NFL analysts bet on QB to succeed under Kyle Shanahan at 49ers

After the San Francisco 49ers missed a massive opportunity to play in the Super Bowl, courtesy of their final round defeat against the eventual World Champions Los Angeles Rams, a section within the franchise believed the time had come to hand over the duties of the crucial quarterback position to the 21-year old Trey Lance.

49ers veteran quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo did not seem his usual self during the playoff matches and failed to coordinate the offensive part of their gameplay, which led to calls for replacing him.

The offseason, therefore, gives the 49ers and their head coach, Kyle Shanahan the perfect opportunity to groom Trey Lance to succeed as their No.1 quarterback for the coming season. The idea has gathered the vote of a number of leading NFL analysts, which includes LaDainian Tomlinson, Michael Robinson and James Jones.

All of them were of a similar view, that Shanahan’s style of play would suit Trey Lance even more and that the 49ers can reach greater heights with him being at the centre of the field, rather than what they did with Jimmy Garoppolo.

“You’re not asking him to read the entire defense,” LaDainian Tomlinson told NBC Sports Bay Area. “You’re asking him to look at certain parts of the field and deliver accurately. That’s the best thing you can have as a young quarterback. The offense evolves after that.”

“That’s why I’m so excited about Trey Lance, and him learning the offense and taking some ownership of it,” Michael Robinson said. “Because I truly believe that if you have a quarterback with some movement skills like a Trey Lance, it just takes this Kyle Shanahan offense to new heights.

In his assessment of the current situation at the 49ers, James Jones said, “I don’t think we’ve seen it since maybe when RG3 was running this style of system. That wasn’t truly able to evolve to what it was capable of because the next year he got hurt. Trey Lance, once he owns this offense I think the sky is the limit for the team.”

“I think he will be just fine but I think they will start out slow and see how much he can handle when came time comes,” Jones said. “If he can, and I think he will, it’s going to be a dominant offense. And we all know there is much more he can do with Trey than he could do with Jimmy [Garoppolo].”
