Former Patriots executive makes shocking comparison, says Tua Tagovailoa will replicate 7x Super Bowl winner Tom Brady

Tua Tagovailoa and Tom Brady

Tua Tagovailoa has been making the headlines for the past few weeks. Not for something he said or did but due to his newest member of the Miami Dolphins, Tyreek Hill. The star wideout that the Dolphins acquired during the offseason made a huge claim for which he was chastised by the fans and critics alike.

Hill suggested that Tua is a more accurate passer than his former Kansas City Chiefs QB and Super Bowl LIV winner Patrick Mahomes. This bold claim made by Hill didn’t sit right with anyone in the league. This statement also brought about Tua’s performance review and it didn’t match that of a fifth overall pick.

Tua Tagovailoa might develop arm strength later on in his career just like Tom Brady did

Miami Dolphins have their playoffs hopes riding on Tua Tagovailoa. Despite having a great resume, Tua hasn’t been that effective in winning games for the Dolphins. Tua’s continuous lack of success was attributed to a lot of factors. The Dolphins’ ineffective offensive line and poor receiving corps were blamed for Tua’s declining performance. However, Miami has significantly improved their pass protection and wide receiving group this offseason.

Miami has eliminated all excuses for Tagovailoa. Tua’s arm strength is still the main source of skepticism. However, former New England Patriots executive Scott Pioli is confident in the Dolphins’ QB’s ability to make a strong comeback. “Tua’s arm strength will be just fine. First five years of Tom Brady’s career, critics said over and over that he can’t throw the deep ball. It’s all dink and dunk. Brady was deadly accurate. He was being told to make high percentage throws, because that’s what he could do best at that time. As he got older, he got stronger,” Pioli talked to the Miami Herald and explained the similarities between Brady and Tua.

Comparing a third-year QB to one of the greatest players in NFL history is a bit much. Tom Brady didn’t have an exceptional arm strength like Mahomes or Allen but he made up for the fact through his impeccable timing, accuracy, and a football IQ like none. Unless Tua turns into Brady overnight, he will need the help of his surrounding talent to lift his game.

According to Pro Football Focus, Tagovailoa posted the third-highest completion rate (48.3%) on throws 20-plus yards downfield in 2022 but he also finished 35th in deep-throw attempt rate (7.5%). Tua is yet to show the league his capability to win clutch games and lead a franchise. Let’s whether year three proves to be his year or not!
