“Greatest comeback in conference championship” – Joe Burrow equals Peyton Manning for a sensational record

Peyton Manning and Joe Burrow

Joe Burrow pulled off the greatest playoff comeback in the NFL. Cincinnati Bengals were 18 down in the second quarter and it looked like Kansas City would obliterate the Bengals and head to their 3rd consecutive Super Bowl.

However, Joe Burrow played like a superstar and was practically unstoppable while leading the Bengals to a spectacular comeback that landed them in the Super Bowl.

The Bengals didn’t have the start that they’d hoped for. They failed to convert on 3rd downs in the first quarter. The Chiefs on the other hand were in full throttle and they scored every chance they got. The Chiefs were leading 21-3 in the second quarter when Joe Burrow and the Bengals decided they’d had enough and started to dominate the game thereafter.

The Bengals were 13-21 with 3 minutes left in the 3rd quarter. Joe Burrow created magic and covered 11 points in 2 minutes 40 seconds to tie the game at the end of the third quarter. As the game went into OT, the Bengals’ defense shut out Patrick Mahomes and this placed the ball in Burrow’s hands. Finally, Evan McPherson drilled a 31-yard field goal to give Cincinnati the 27-24 win at Kansas City in the AFC championship game Sunday.

This comeback from Joe Burrow tied the greatest comeback ever in a conference title game by Peyton Manning and the Colts against Tom Brady and the Patriots in the 2006 AFC Championship game. New England led 21-3 owing to a pair of first-half turnovers (including a Manning pick-six) which led to Patriots touchdowns. Just like Burrow, Manning engineered the greatest comeback in AFC Championship Game history, throwing for 349 yards while outdueling Brady in a 38-34 win.

Two weeks later, Manning and the Colts went on to defeat the Chicago Bears in Super Bowl XLI. If this comeback is any indication, it looks like the Bengals will win Super Bowl LVI. Judging the way Burrow has been in the entire playoffs, there is no doubt the Bengals will win the Super Bowl defeating the Rams at their home ground, the SoFi Stadium.
