The NFL headquarters in Manhattan, New York, is the place where Commissioner Roger Goodell and most of the top executives work. There, they discuss matters on how to improve the game as well as fan experiences while targeting revenue growth year after year.

They might not have discussed how to protect themselves in case someone barged into the building and started shooting at them. Goodell and other NFL staff thankfully did not have to face anything, but Blackstone employees on the floors below them did.

27-year-old Shane Tamura walked into 345 Park Avenue, armed with an AR-15 rifle, and opened fire. Since it was evening rush time, he killed 5 people, including an NYPD officer, in that shootout. Bullets from his rifle also injured 6 other people.

The Las Vegas security guard took the elevator up to the 33rd floor, where the Rudin Management offices were housed. He continued to fire off bullets, killing one person, and then finally shot himself in the chest.

The death toll/injury count is not final as authorities continue to search the 44-story building. After the NYPD, the FBI, and other agencies stormed the building, it was deemed that the shooting had stopped.

Blackstone employees had barricaded their doors with couches and file cabinets, and the NFL activated security protocols to ensure their safety and security of their employees.

NFL headquarters shooter was a former football star

The shooter, Shane Devon Tamura, drove all the way from Las Vegas, where he works as a security guard for a casino. Police found a Nevada-registered car near the NFL headquarters, where they also found additional ammo, magazines, and another gun.

It is unknown if Tamura had any direct grievances towards Rudin Management, Blackstone, or the NFL. However, it has been revealed that the 27-year-old was a football star in college. A video of him after playing a game for Granada Hills Charter several years ago started surfacing online.

In the video, he is referred to as a ‘standout running back’ who had just scored two touchdowns, with one late in the game that apparently sealed the win. Tamura also played for Golden Valley before graduating from Granada Hills.

It is unclear if he tried to continue his football aspirations. Again, law enforcement is investigating the motives of his shooting spree as initial claims indicate Tamura had problems with his mental health.

However, the extra ammunition and revolver point to the possibility of him looking to continue on his shooting spree. Now, more details come in about the possibility of an NFL employee being injured in this shooting.

NFL employee severely injured

Once details of the deadly shooting in Manhattan started to become clearer, the Daily Mail learned that an NFL employee was severely injured. The NFL headquarters are on the 5th floor of 345 Park Avenue.

However, as per the details, Shane Tamura took the elevator directly to the 33rd floor. This means it is possible that this NFL employee was caught in the lobby. As per the Daily Mail, Commissioner Roger Goodell had emailed his employees updating them about the situation.

He revealed that some staff members are at the hospital where this employee was being treated, and they are also speaking with the family. Other than that employee, the league believes all other staff are safe and secure.

According to the Daily Mail sources, Goodell advised employees to either work remotely or take the day off if they felt the need. The Commissioner also assured them that the league will ensure there is increased security present in and around the building.
