“History made” – Twitter reacts after Dolphins GM Chris Grier’s brother becomes first black GM in NHL

Chris Grier, general manager for the Miami Dolphins couldn’t contain his excitement as his younger brother Mike creates history in the National Hockey League. Mike Grier became the first black GM in NHL’s history since his hiring by the San Jose Sharks.

Chris has been with the Dolphins since 2000, handling various scouting positions until he finally became the general manager in 2016. Chirs was the only member of his family to hold this position up until Mike decide to add another GM into the family.

Mike Grier played as an ice hockey winger for over 14 years. He starred for the Edmonton Oilers, Washington Capitals, Buffalo Sabres, and San Jose Sharks. He also served as a scout for the Chicago Blackhawks and an assistant coach with the New Jersey Devils. Prior to being hired by the Sharks, Grier was the hockey operations advisor to the New York Rangers.

On July 5, 2022, the San Jose Sharks hired him to be their General Manager which consequently made him the first black GM in NHL history. Chris Grier like a proud big brother expressed his happiness via a statement through the Dolphins: “I am incredibly happy and proud of Mike. The San Jose Sharks organization is getting a man of high character and integrity. He has always been respected on and off the ice by his peers. Mike will bring his work ethic and passion every day to the job. Mike understands the game, with intelligence, experience and knowledge to succeed as a GM.

“Our parents deserve all the credit for how they raised us. We were very fortunate to be able to observe and learn from our father, Bobby, while growing up. Congratulations to Mike and the San Jose Sharks on a great hire!” Mike Grier succeeded Doug Wilson who stepped down in April to focus on his health.
