The American football team, Las Vegas Raiders holds the prominent record of three Super Bowl trophies. The team is based in Las Vegas, Nevada, and has been part of the National Football League (NFL), since the mega-merger. Raiders are one of the eight original teams of the American Football Conference (AFL) and were established in 1960.
Entering the AFL plays, the Raiders didn’t see a good season for three straight years. Later in 1963, Al Davis was hired as the new head coach and the general manager of the franchise. As he joined, he introduced the players to a “vertical” passing attack that was long throws downfield to stretch the opponent’s defense. He also coined the motto for the team, “Just win, baby.“
In no time, the Raiders became strong contenders in the league. By 1966, Davis became the part-owner of the franchise, and as he did, he started buying out the other owners to claim sole ownership. And he gained that by 1976.
With promising players like Daryle Lamonica as starring quarterback and Jim Otto as centre, the Raiders paved their way to winning the first AFL championship, in 1967. This immediately levelled them up to their first-ever Super Bowl appearance in January 1968. However, they lost the game to the Green Bay Packers.
Then came John Madden, head coach of the Raiders in 1969. He led the team to succeed as an elite professional football team. In Madden’s 10-year tenure with the Raiders, the team logged consecutive victories, along with their very first Super Bowl triumph in 1977. After him, it was Tom Flores who joined as head coach and led the team to their second Super Bowl win in 1981.
In the process of relocating the Raiders to Los Angeles to have a stable home stadium, Davis went through a landmark antitrust lawsuit against the NFL, but successfully won it in 1982. As they did, they qualified for the playoffs for four straight years and also brought him their third Super Bowl trophy.
To date, the Raiders have appeared in the Super Bowl five times, until 2003. Since then, the team hasn’t had a chance to show a winning performance at the Super Bowl level.
