“It’s going to be fireworks” Robert Griffin III reveals one crucial thing Trey Lance needs to succeed in 2022

The name Trey Lance had everyone’s heads turning last April when the San Francisco 49ers used the 3rd overall pick in the 2021 draft to select him. What’s more unbelievable is that they gave up 2 first rounders and a third to get the pick from the Dolphins.

When you draft a quarterback that high, nowadays they are expected to be the day one starter come the regular season. That wasn’t the case for Trey Lance, however. The Niners had Jimmy Garoppolo around to take up that starting role but that relationship has been complicated for a while now.

Despite leading the team to Super Bowl LIV, Jimmy Garoppolo’s future with the team was somewhat always in doubt as he failed to deliver in the big moments. So, when they used the #3 overall pick on Trey Lance, everyone figured he was done before the 2021 season even started.

In the end, Garoppolo remained the starter but now, heading into the offseason, all signs are pointing to him being traded away and Lance to take over. Robert Griffin III revealed some lofty expectations for Lance in 2022.

Robert Griffin III believes Trey Lance only needs the right situation to succeed

While at the NFL combine, Jordan Elliot of ‘Niners Nation’ asked Robert Griffin III about Trey Lance to which he said “The only way for Trey Lance to truly develop is to play. He’s got to make mistakes. He’s got to have success. So, I think you just reserve judgment until then. You won’t see me talking bad about Trey Lance on TV because I don’t know what he is yet.”

Griffin further added “He has the skill set. He has the arm talent. He has the athleticism. So, if he gets the opportunity and Jimmy’s not there anymore, I think it’s going to be fireworks. But he’s got to prove that.”

We still have to wait to see what happens with Jimmy Garoppolo this offseason. However, it’s very hard to imagine that the Niners don’t want Lance starting in 2022 given what they gave up to get him last year. We’ll just have to wait and see but the day any confirmation comes about a Garoppolo trade, that’s also official confirmation that Lance is their starter in 2022.
