“Jimmy Garoppolo or Trey Lance” – NFL analysts discuss which QB will start for the 49ers against the Rams in week 18

The San Francisco 49ers will face the Los Angeles Rams in their last match of the regular season needing just a win to secure themselves a playoff berth. 49ers are currently having a record of 9-7 and are at 3rd position in NFC West behind Rams and Cardinals.

Ahead of their potential playoff-clinching matchup against the Rams, the 49ers have are facing a dilemma at the QB position as both Trey Lance and Jimmy Garoppolo are in contention to start the game and it will be up to the coaches on who they think should start the game.

Analyst on Good Morning Football said, “Kyle Shanahan has beaten Sean McVay 5 times in a row and Jimmy Garoppolo was the QB in all those games. The dude knows how to go out there and beat the Rams. Their system revolves around the run game, giving Deebo Samuel the ball and making space for George Kittle to make big plays with Jimmy Garoppolo leading them.”

“Can it be a Jimmy Lance or Trey Garoppolo,” said Mike Rob. He further added, “If Jimmy G is fit, he should be the QB as he has been in the previous 5 games against the Rams. Jimmy G will be the right man for the match as he has the experience of these matches and can lead the 49ers to win the match and qualify for the playoffs.”

Uncertainty over Jimmy Garoppolo’s position

Jimmy Garoppolo’s position at 49ers has been very unclear so far as the team had traded their assets to acquire a higher draft pick to acquire Trey Lance who has been so far kept as an understudy to Jimmy G.

Jimmy G so far this season has so far thrown for 3494 yards with 19 touchdowns and 10 interceptions while having a passer rating of 99.6 whereas Trey Lance has thrown for 603 yards with 5 touchdowns and 2 interceptions with a passer rating of 97.3 which is good enough.

“Kyle Shanahan doesn’t need a QB to win the game. He just needs a QB to not lose the game.”

This statement comes in because the 49ers will dominate the run game against the Rams as they have already done in the past which has brought them positive results. Whether Jimmy G or Trey Lance won’t matter much but it’s an obvious choice that if Jimmy Garoppolo is fit he should start because of his experience in such big games.

Jimmy G would be hoping to lead the 49ers to a win against the Rams to secure the playoff spot for the franchise. The 49ers will be hoping to make a deep playoff run like they did in 2019 and their team has all the potential required to repeat that.
