“Josh McCown to be hired as a HEAD COACH?” Houston Texans are considering the former quarterback as a ‘serious candidate’
Josh McCown
Josh McCown could have a job in the NFL again. But this time, as a head coach? As unbelievable as that sounds, not only is it possible, but it could be likely too as the Houston Texans are is top prospect to give McCown his head coaching debut in the NFL.
In the short history of the Texans franchise, they had 4 head coaches total until 2020. Whoever they hire this offseason will be the 4th head coach since 2020. It certainly has been more of a curse than a gift in recent years given Bill O’Brien’s antics that tore up the team and left them in their current state. Deshaun Watson’s legal situation has made the Texans even more of a laughing stock.
The Texans are most certainly aware of their image among the league and its fans which is possibly why this hire is even being considered. If it were a few years ago this would be ludicrous, but now? It seems to fit the narrative which is why NFL reporter, Ian Rapoport, says it wouldn’t surprise him.
“I wouldn’t be stunned”- Ian Rapoport on the possible hiring of Josh McCown
In a segment of ‘The Pat Mcafee Show,’ the famous NFL analyst Ian Rapoport came on to the show to discuss McCown’s situation saying “He’s a serious candidate. So, if they hired him I wouldn’t be stunned or surprised. Everyone’s gonna laugh, everyone’s gonna make fun of the Texans and they don’t care. We’ve seen hires that are praised and they go one and done and are terrible. None of it means anything.”
He also added “They’ve got a pretty good infrastructure there. They’re building an organization from the ground up and he’s a serious candidate. They’ve interviewed him twice. Once last year and once this year. So, if they hire him I wouldn’t be stunned, they’d just have to help him. They‘d have to get older guys who have been there to guide him.”
In terms of McCown’s credibility, Rapoport had this to say “He has been a coach in every quarterback room he’s been in. This is not me justifying the hire, I’m just saying, ask any quarterback who’s been in the room with him, what kind of a leader he is and they will tell you. The Texans are gonna get killed no matter what they do which is all fine but I think this is something to keep an eye on.”
The likelihood of this working out like a Sean McVay or a Kliff Kingsbury is so low we can’t even imagine it. The Texans are in more than a rebuild right now. This whole organization is starting itself over again and they’re looking to put pieces together that could possibly work so going for the rookie head coach to have him gel with the team and form bonds for the long run could work out for them.
They definitely need to get the additional hires spot on however if McCown is to find any success in the future as the team he would potentially be taking over is nowhere near a successful season as of now.
