The football game which holds the iconic record of being the highest scoring NFL game ever way back on 27th November 1966 between the Washington Redskins and the New York Giants. The two franchises combined together to earn a total of a whopping 113 points over the four quarters, with the Washington football team winning this ball game in the end by a margin of 72-41. Speak of offensive teams going ballistic! Even in today’s time, it is hard to believe that a single team crossed the 50 points barrier.

The Giants conceded over 45 points in three consecutive games, starting with their match against their opponents mentioned above. They gave up 49 points in the next game against the Cleveland Browns and 47 points against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

This particular game came in the pre-Super Bowl era, a time when the NFL wasn’t as advanced and rule-oriented, as it is today. The game recorded a total of 16 touchdowns, a number which is hard to match in the modern way of playing the game. A championship game or a playoff game can only dream of such a box score. The scorekeeper might have had his hands full with keeping the track of touchdown passes, interceptions, rushing yards, and whatnot in a single game.

Along with the touchdowns, there was another field goal scored by the Washington football team’s kicker Charlie Gogolak, who added to the scoreline in the final seconds of the end of the game. Another hilarious fact that needs to be addressed, was the number of footballs that were lost during the course of the game, due to the absence of a net behind the playing surface.

Gogolak contributed to that number by returning a 70-yard fumble, which eventually found its way into the crowd. The Giants had a horrible season that year and won only a single game, finishing the season with a 1-12-1 record.

Even today, this particular ‘single’ game is one of the biggest games and a record that has now been standing for over half a century.
