The San Francisco 49ers had a tough start to the 2022 season. The franchise traded away their three first-round picks to select Trey Lance third overall in the 2021 NFL draft. The 49ers were sure of Lance being the one to take them back to the pinnacle where Joe Montana once led them.

Trey Lance spent his rookie season as a backup to veteran Jimmy Garoppolo but got the chance to start in 2022. Unfortunately, the young signal-caller succumbed to an ankle injury that effectively ended his season. Bad luck kept on piling up for the 49ers as Garoppolo was also injured in Week 13 and had to be taken off the field.

Then started the most magical story of the 2022 season. Brock Purdy was named the starting quarterback and boy the story had the perfect script. Purdy led the 49ers to victories week after week and led them straight to the NFC Championship game. He didn’t lose a single game until the Eagles got the best of them because Purdy wasn’t playing in that game due to an injury.

Brock Purdy suffered a tear in his UCL and is expected to be out for six to eight weeks. The starting quarterback job in the 49ers is still vacant as the team is divided into two factions. One supporting Purdy and the other Trey Lance. Head coach Kyle Shanahan and GM John Lynch kind of leaned toward Mr. Irrelevant when asked about the looming situation during the NFL’s annual meeting.

Shanahan said, “We’re going to start whoever gives us the best chance to win. Brock’s a guy who’s leading that because we’ve seen him play. But he’s hurt right now, and I don’t know if we’ll have him Week 1 and I don’t know if we’ll have him in training camp. I think there’s a possibility on all that.”

San Francisco’s CEO Jed York still believes Trey Lance is the guy for the 49ers. “I wouldn’t change anything that we’ve made about the decision with Trey,” York said, via NBC Sports Bay Area. “I think Trey has a chance to be great. But it’s a bonus when you get somebody at the end of the seventh round that ends up coming in and being very impactful for your team. You can’t worry about, well, Trey hasn’t played as many games as we would’ve liked. It’s not his fault. He got injured.”

Trey Lance started only two games last season and was 1-1 and threw zero touchdowns and 1 interception. Brock Purdy on the other hand has proven himself to be a winner at every stage in the NFL. He won all of his regular season games and mind well that not all of them were easy encounters. He defeated NFL legend Tom Brady and the Bucs and handled the pressure of performing in the playoffs like a pro.

With Purdy being out for a long time, Trey Lance has the opportunity to be the starter and prove himself to be a stalwart guy for the team. It’ll be interesting to see whether the first-round pick starts in Week 1 or does the last pick in the 2022 NFL draft takes that chance away from him.
