It’s official! The San Francisco 49ers have released cornerback Isaiah Oliver this Friday. By doing so, they created an immediate $2.4 million salary cap, just hours after the NFL officially announced the increase in salary cap for the 2024 offseason to more than $30 million.

It was Oliver’s second year with the franchise on contract with $6.75 million which he signed as an unrestricted free agent last offseason, when the Niners lost their best nickel back, Jimmie Ward to the Houston Texans. Oliver stepped in his shoes and took over the position of starting nickel.

However, he couldn’t sit well in the role and was later admitted to the special team, to be used exclusively. He was replaced after the team’s downfall midseason with a three-game losing streak, as they head into the bye week.

For the active roster, starting cornerback Deommodore Lenoir filled in for the nickel back right in the middle of the season. Ambry Thomas covered as a corner when the 49ers needed Lenoir as nickel.

Unfortunately, Thomas too began to struggle late in the season, and the Niners had no choice but to go with the midseason pickup, veteran Logan Ryan as the starting nickel back in the tragic loss to the Kansas City Chiefs at Super Bowl LVIII.

As the franchise has now released the 27-year-old CB, their agenda for the 2024 offseason will be to find a player who would strengthen their ability to cover the receivers on the opponents’ side— something they lacked this season.

Oliver’s contract with the franchise included a fully guaranteed money of $2.91 million, which they probably saved however, the CB would still be entitled to $1.46 million in dead money from their 2024 salary cap.

Fan reaction to 49ers’ decision to release Isaiah Oliver

Fans seemed to have appreciated the Niners’ decision as they referred to it as ‘good riddance’ on social media. After six seasons with the Atlanta Falcons and two seasons with the 49ers, Oliver is once again a free agent and may join whichever team he’d prefer.
