“Aaron doesn’t need reps”: Packers quarterback coach Tom Clements is extremely biased towards Aaron Rodgers

Teams across the NFL are buzzing once again as all the facilities are sprawling with players once again. With the commencement of OTAs or organized team activities, all the players are bonding with their new teammates and building chemistry amongst one another ahead of the pre-season. However, there are many teams across the league that have a player or two missing from their roster. Unfortunately, these players are the key players for those teams as well.

For the San Francisco 49ers, it is Deebo Samuel and Jimmy G, for the Browns it is Baker Mayfield, and for the Green Bay Packers, it is none other than Aaron Rodgers. The veteran pro bowler has not been with his team since the commencement of OTAs. The team’s HC Matt LaFleur brushed his absence aside by telling that he is not concerned. He also left the possibility out that the QB would take part in some of the OTAs but for the most part, it was his choice if he wants to come or not.

“He’s in great spirits, I wouldn’t anticipate seeing him this week”: Matt LaFleur on Aaron Rodgers

Head Coach Matt LaFleur said that he spoke to Rodgers recently, “I talked to him for a while last night, which was great, just to kind of update him on just where we are and go over a few, like we do every offseason, there’s always tweaks to what you’re doing. But no, he’s in great spirits and it was a great conversation. But I wouldn’t anticipate seeing him at least this week.”

Rodgers is supposed to show up for the mandatory minicamp that is scheduled to happen between the 7th and 9th of June. He had come on the Pat McAfee Show and said that he would be attending a part of the OTAs in Green Bay.

The team’s quarterback coach Tom Clements had this to say about Aaron’s absence at OTAs, “Aaron doesn’t need reps at this time of the year, obviously, it’d be nice to have him here, but he’s seen these things 1,000 times and he’ll be ready to go when training camp starts.” The team began their OTAs this Monday and their practice session was opened up to the media on Tuesday.

Rodgers had made a surprise appearance at Lambeau Field during the conditioning part of the offseason program earlier last month and took part in drills as well. He had come to the area to attend an NBA game with the Milwaukee Bucks.

Clements has full faith in Rodgers, “He’ll be ready to go, he’ll be eager to go. He’s just at a different stage of his career now, where he’s taking care of himself and working on what he thinks he needs to work on physically. He looked good when I saw him, so he’ll be ready to go.”

Earlier last year, Aaron skipped the entire offseason program including the mandatory minicamp as his entire future with the team was doubtful, he was in a fix on if he wanted to return to the team or not. This year his absence is different as he is fully committed to Green Bay under a $150 million, three-year extension in March.

The Packers’ backup QB Jordan Love on the other hand was present and is playing in full force, he is handling all of Rodger’s quarterback reps during OTA. The backup was asked if the extension of Aaron impacted his future with the team, “I have no idea. Honestly. I am super happy for Aaron, obviously, the dude deserves it; obviously, what he’s done the last two years. Personally, for me, it just means I’m about to be a backup again for this year. That’s all I can control right now. I was happy for Aaron, but at the same time it’s like, ‘Ahh,’ you know?.” He said, stating that he will play whatever role that the team requires him to.
