Deion Sanders, former NFL player, and Colorado Buffalo HC recently got into a religious controversy after thanking God in his press conference. Sanders was recently hired as the Head Coach for the Colorado Buffalo and was grateful to God for all the things in his life and was thankful for the opportunity.

However, there was an organization that didn’t like Sanders’ speech and decided to write a letter to Colorado University asking the management to take responsibility for the students and called out Sanders for being a ‘coach’ and not a ‘pastor’.

“The University of Colorado must take action to protect it’s student athletes and to ensure that Sanders understands that he has been hired as a football coach and not a pastor,” Freedom from religious foundations (FFRF) stated in their complaint letter.

This incident soon became a nationwide issue, and many started to give their own opinions regarding the same. Fox News spoke about the recent Deion Sanders controversy and asked former Patriots TE Ben Watson for his honest opinion.

Watson pointed out the attempts being made currently to squash religious freedom in the country. The former TE believes that religion is a choice and that everyone should be given the liberty to practice their own religion. Even the Supreme court has an amendment that allows people to practice their religion.

“As Americans of all religions, whether you’re an atheist or not, there’s an imperative that we understand that freedom of religious expression is important,” Ben Watson stated on Fox News. “We have to stand up for religious freedom of all religions because that’s what makes America what it is.”

Sanders’ recent religious controversy has been gaining steam since its inception and now a new organization has written a letter to Colorado University. However, this letter was in Sanders’ defense and pointed out the Supreme Court’s amendment regarding religious freedom.

The First Liberty Institute also corrected the misstatements made by FFRF regarding the requirements imposed by the first amendment on public school employees.

“The [U.S.] Supreme Court has repeatedly held that public school employees may engage in religious expression and exercise; therefore, public universities like CU may not target Coach Sanders (or other members of the football staff) for exercising constitutional rights on campus,” Russell wrote in the letter,” The first Liberty Institute said in the letter.

Deion Sanders has been a man of faith since he started his career in the NFL with the Falcons and went on to win the Super Bowl while also playing in Major League Baseball. The Hall of Fame inductee has a huge legacy behind him and his religious faith was never the problem until now.
