The New England Patriots continue to remain hesitant regarding their quarterback, the team is going on a week-to-week basis and both QBs Bailey Zappe and Mac Jones have been getting an equal amount of reps at practice every week. However, after the team’s horrific performance last week, Bill Belichick has decided to switch things up a bit. This week, Bailey Zappe has been getting the bulk of the reps at practice.

The quarterback admitted via NBC Sports that while “nothing is set in stone” when it comes to determining who the starting QB will be for the Pats against the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday, he has been getting most of the workload which indicates that the team is heading towards his direction rather than Mac Jones.

Bill Belichick continued to remain reluctant to name a starter at his Friday’s press conference, but he was more open while speaking on questions with respect to Bailey Zappe. The HC described his QB as “pretty consistent” and visibly took a shot at Mac Jones when he said that there is

not a lot of roller coaster with him.

Bailey Zappe has shown that he can be a worthy replacement in place of Mac Jones. He started two games last season when Jones was hurt and has replaced Jones’ in the team’s losses against the New York Giants and the Indianapolis Colts.

While his last performance against the Giants was no good as he added to the team’s woes by throwing another interception on top of Mac Jones’ two turnovers, Sunday would be a fresh start for him.

If Zappe does start on Sunday and plays a decent game without turnovers then it would be more than enough to convince Belichick that he should be the team’s starter for at least, the remainder of this season. The Patriots are having the worst season in the NFL having won 2 games and lost 9.

This performance has raised a lot of questions around the ability of Bill Belichick as a HC and GM, the team’s future moving forward, and most importantly, the doubts around who will be the QB of the team long-term?
