“We don’t look at colour!”: Bucs HC Todd Bowles SLAMS reporters for bringing race in discussion for “black” coaches

It is true that the representation of Black head coaches in the NFL is very low at the moment, with the count being only four. Todd Bowles of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Mike Tomlin of the Pittsburgh Steelers, Lovie Smith of the Houston Texans and Steve Wilks with the Carolina Panthers.

However, it’s unnecessary to bring race into the discussion everytime two black coaches go up against each other, which will be exactly the case when the Bucaneers and Steelers lock horns. Todd Bowles was recently quizzed on this and he has criticised bringing the race into the limelight.

‘You guys need to stop making a big deal out of this’: Todd Bowles gives his take on Black NFL coaches discussion

Todd Bowles was in no mood to fall for the ‘race card’ bait and responded by saying that all he was focused on was judging people by their gameplay and coaching and not their colour. He added that he has a lot of ‘white’ friends as well who are great coaches in the NFL and it remains normal when they come up against each other.

I have a very good relationship with Tomlin. We don’t look at what color we are when we coach against each other, we just know each other,” Bowles said.”I have a lot of very good white friends that coach in this league as well, and I don’t think it’s a big deal as far as us coaching against each other, I think it’s normal. Wilks got an opportunity to do a good job, hopefully, he does it. And we coach ball, we don’t look at color.”

Todd Bowles was quick to understand the direction in which the reporter wanted to take the question towards when he used the term “look like them” and “grew up like them” and was immediately shutting them down.

Well, when you say, ‘They see you guys,’ and ‘look like them and grew up like them,’ it means that we’re oddballs to begin with,” Bowles said. “I think the minute you guys stop making a big deal about it, everybody else will as well.”
