For Chase Claypool, his expectations about himself turned out to be far different in reality. His 2-year stint with the Chicago Bears is nothing short of a travesty for someone who labeled himself as the ‘top 3 receiver in the NFL.’

Last year, Claypool made an appearance on the I Am Athlete Podcast. Hosts LeSean McCoy, Brandon Marshall, and PacMan Jones asked Chase about his assessment of how good he was.

“I know for a fact I’m not like the rest of the guys in the NFL,” Claypool said, as the others egged him on from the side. “I know that I’m a top-five receiver; I know I’m a top-three receiver. When I’m working, I’m like a dawg.”

It’s fair to say this hasn’t aged well. Yesterday, it was announced that the Bears were parting ways with Chase Claypool, trading him to the Miami Dolphins. Soon after the news went public, this short clip resurfaced once again, and it does not paint a good picture for the 25-year-old.

Social media blasts Chase Claypool for failing to live up to the hype he generated

Chase Claypool was a four-star prospect coming out of college football. He had committed to Notre Dame Irish and was wreaking havoc on the scene. In four seasons, he played 50 games, gained 2,159 receiving yards, and scored 19 touchdowns. The Pittsburgh Steelers selected Claypool during the second round of the 2020 NFL Draft.

He showed promise early on with 62 receptions for 873 yards and nine touchdowns, which secured him a spot on the PFWA All-Rookie Team of 2020. However, it went downhill from there. In 2021, despite starting more games, he could only muster 860 yards and two touchdowns all season. Then, just eight games into 2022, the Steelers decided upon a midseason trade to the struggling Bears.

The Chicago franchise was in a slump. Highly regarded quarterback Justin Fields was having an amazing season and needed some assistance. They probably hoped Chase Claypool could solve the problems. However, he only played 10 games (including 2023), completed just under 200 yards, and made a solitary endzone run as the Bears failed to record a single victory in 14 games. Then they went ahead and signed D.J. Moore from the Carolina Panthers. The Bears then benched Claypool, implying they had seen enough.

Claypool’s work ethic has always been in contention. Few were quick to point out that he would rather focus on non-football things than the game itself. He was famous for making TikTok videos, and apparently, he did not stop even when asked to.

Then there was the infamous celebration that cost Pittsburgh a game. In 2022, they were playing against the Minnesota Vikings. In the fourth quarter, the Vikings were leading 36-28, but the Steelers could come back with the latest drive. Quarterback Ben Rothlisberger threw an accurate pass to Claypool, and after securing it, he chose to pose for the camera. And because of it, they lost precious seconds, which ended up costing his team the game.

Needless to say, head coach Mike Tomlin wasn’t happy with the receiver. However, instead of owning the mistake, he later tried to push the blame on his teammates.

Inside sources claimed Chase was becoming a bad influence in the locker room. That’s why the Steelers got rid of him. Few say that the Bears had similar reasons as well, but they haven’t made any comments regarding that. However, veteran ESPN sports analyst Stephen A. Smith sent a warning to Chase Claypool. He said, “You are developing a very bad reputation.”

Whether or not he will get a chance to start in Miami is still a massive question. There are several first-rate wide receivers, such as Tyreek Hill, Jaylen Waddle, and Braxton Berrios, ahead of him in the pack.
