“Browns rigged his contract”: Deshaun Watson’s outrageous contract has irked all the teams across the NFL
Deshaun Watson
Deshaun Watson just cannot catch a break. Despite being awarded only a 6-game suspension over the 24+ sexual misconduct cases levied against him, he was unable to reassure himself as the NFL decided to appeal the decision. With this once again his season hangs in the balance. In addition to just the NFL, the Commissioner, and the entire public, Watson has irked the ire of all 31 other teams across the league as well.
Teams across the league are not happy over his contract that they believe is “rigged” as the quarterback will be losing ten cents on the dollar from the league’s disciplinary action. Watson signed a five-year, $230 million contract in March, and as soon as he signed it, he got a bonus of $8.9 million in signing bonuses and a base salary of a million for the 2022 season as his own agent along with the Browns had anticipated a season-long suspension.
The Cleveland Browns rigged Watson’s contract so that he would not lose a lot of money due to suspension
Watson will make $46 million per season from next year onwards. If the appeal were to fail, Deshaun will be losing $345,000 of his salary or $57,500 per game. In the big picture, this amount means nothing to the quarterback which is why other teams are angry at the Browns organization for constructing such a deal.
One report states the following, “One influential NFL person told me on this trip that it doesn’t sit well with the league or 31 other NFL owners that the Browns rigged the Watson contract so that his suspension would cause him to lose only a fraction of his 2022 compensation,” as per Peter King of NBC.
Browns GM Andrew Berry dismissed this by stating that Watson’s contract was “very similar to a lot of the larger player contracts we already have on the books,” they may be different but Watson’s contract is designed to ensure minimal financial loss to him.
“We understand the optics of it. I think for us after we got comfortable with Deshaun, the contract was really a football decision. The things that were important to us from a club perspective were to have Deshaun under contract for another year and to have it structured in a manner that would allow us maximum flexibility to execute the rest of our offseason plans,” the GM added.
Formal Federal Judge and independent disciplinary officer Sue L. Robinson discovered that Deshaun Watson had violated the NFL’s personal conduct policy but concluded that he would get only a 6-game suspension. The league appealed the decision and it has now appointed New Jersey Attorney General Peter C. Harvey to hear the case.
