The Washington Commanders have made up the decision to bench their starting quarterback Sam Howell for the upcoming game against the San Francisco 49ers, scheduled on New Year’s Eve. There have been quite some speculations on whom the team is willing to move forward with, next season.

The Commanders are “very interested” in pursuing the star quarterback from USC, Caleb Williams, as per ESPN’s Dan Graziano. He wrote:

The Commanders…could find themselves in a position to either draft Williams or trade up a spot or two to get him.

Holding the third overall section, the franchise is highly likely to draft Williams as their No. 1 overall pick from the 2024 NFL draft. Though considering their six-game losing streak this season, it seems the Commanders may be moved up in the draft order in the next two weeks.

As for the New Year’s Eve game, head coach Ron Rivera announced veteran backup Jacoby Brissett has been promoted as the start, in the game against the 49ers. Standing at the very bottom of the NFC East at a 4-11 season record, it seems the Commanders are getting over this season. They are already focusing on next season which they plan to come stronger than ever with college football star Williams.

The young quarterback that Washington is pursuing is the winner of the 2022 Heisman Trophy. He’s a native of D.C. and carries hope to end the franchise playoff drought by establishing them as contenders next season.

Sam Howell’s uncertain future with the Commanders

Sam Howell, selected in the fifth-round pick of the 2022 draft, had quite an impressive start this season. In the span of seven games, the quarterback threw for 2,112 yards and led the league in passing yards.

However, the bright future of Washington came crashing down in the last three weeks. In the last five games, Howell logged merely two touchdowns, while his team is on a six-game losing streak. He has logged the worst NFL interceptions of 17 and was sacked 60 times, which is seven times more than any other QB in the league.

With such bizarre performances, it seems the Commanders’ experiment of going forward with a second-year quarterback failed. Now that the franchise has benched him and with the rumors of a 2024 draft pick, it’s unsure what the Commanders have decided for Howell.
