After hammering the opponent in two consecutive games, the Dallas Cowboys met with their first upset in the third week of 2023 NFL season as the team lost against the Arizona Cardinals. The Cardinals who were winless till that game won by a margin of 28-16. It was a shambolic defeat for the Cowboys as the team failed to keep their defensive momentum. No wonder the team’s defensive coordinator, Dan Quinn, had something to say about this post game.
In the first two games, the Cowboys put on a brilliant defensive display. The team was astonishing with their defensive abilities. In the first game, they beat the New York Giants by 40-0. In the second, they beat the New York Jets by 30-10. So in the first two games, the team only gave up ten points.
However, this defense choked against the Cardinals as they allowed more than 400 yards whereas they had only allowed 386 yards in the first two games combined to the opponent and lost 28 points. Offensively as well, the story was no different.
Analyzing the team’s performance post-Cards game, the DC Dan Quinn said, “I saw a lot yesterday that upset me. Didn’t play to our standards. I do know this about our guys, this is a warrior crew, and know we’ll grow from this.”
“We didn’t play with that relentless energy. We didn’t play how we were capable of. It was not up to the standard we’ve set for ourselves,” he further added.
The Dallas felt the absence of Trevon Diggs well
In the defensive masterclass in the first two games, Trevon Diggs, the cornerback of the Cowboys, had a pivotal role to play. He is an All-Pro and takes an important role in shaping this team’s defensive ability. However, the player is ruled out for the entire season due to his injury on his Achilles.
Without him, the Cowboys struggled as his replacement DaRon Bland failed to meet the expectations. Micah Parsons, the linebacker, also had an average game, as per his standards. The Dallas defense that stood out solid in the first two games trembled in the third.
When defense fails, the role of the offense becomes important in leading the team toward the winning path. However, the offense led by Dak Prescott failed to do that. Dak himself covered more than 240 passing yards with one touchdown. He was also intercepted once, first in this season.
