The Dallas Cowboys have finally made up their mind in regards to their starting quarterback, putting the ongoing controversy to rest atleast for the time being. Head coach Mike McCarthy put in his weight behind Cooper Rush ahead of Dak Prescott to make it to the lineup for their Week-6 NFL fixture against the Philadelphia Eagles.
The decision might look like a bold call on first viewing but the logic behind it makes it perfectly sensible for McCarthy and company, given it is this early into the season. Dak Prescott is yet to completely recover from the right thumb injury he suffered against the Buccaneers in Week-1.
Mike McCarthy has named Cooper Rush as the starter for the Eagles game
The veteran quarterback has just started throwing a football after being cleared by the franchise doctors on Wednesday and it makes perfect sense to not rush him into action.
“We’re preparing for Cooper Rush to start against the Eagles. You’ve got to trust the medical process and this is a 17 game season. I know Dak didn’t want to hear it, but you got to make sure he’s right for the long haul,” said Mike McCarthy according to CowboysSI.com.
“Put your hand down on something that would be the equivalent of a football. Try to do that without thumb strength. Try to spin that ball. Try to direct that ball without thumb strength if you’re really giving it a proper thumb. You can’t do it.”
On the other hand, Cooper Rush has been in exceptional form and has hardly made anyone feel the absence of Prescott in the four games he’s overseen so far this season. There have also been claims from the fans to make him the permanent starting quarterback, but no such decision has been made regarding that yet.
