“I want to run the damn ball,” Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy makes a MASSIVE revelation on potential rift with former OC Kellen Moore

The Dallas Cowboys suffered yet another disappointing end to an NFL season in 2022/23 when they came up short against the San Francisco 49ers in the divisional round. The defeat had an immediate impact, on the franchise’s backroom staff with offensive coordinator Kellen Moore being fired.

The former Cowboys quarterback turned offensive coordinator after his retirement from the franchise in 2018, at the request of head coach Mike McCarthy. However, the relationship between the duo reportedly turned salty at the end of his tenure.

During his tenure with the Cowboys, Moore oversaw their rise to one of the best offenses in the whole of the NFL. In 2021, the Cowboys led the league in terms of total offense and scoring offense, but the head coach explained how he did not want his side to be the No.1 offensive side but the best team in all departments.

“I’ve been where Kellen’s been,” McCarthy said, via Michael Gehlken of the Dallas Morning News. “Kellen wants to light the scoreboard up, but I want him to run the damn ball so I can rest my defense. I think when you’re a coordinator, you know but you’re in charge of the offense.”

“Being a head coach and being a play caller, you’re a little more in tune with (everything). I don’t desire to be the No. 1 offense in the league. I want to be the No. 1 team in the league with the number of wins and a championship. And if we’ve got to give up some production and take care of the ball a little better to get that, then that’s what we’ll do because we have a really good defense.”

After Moore’s firing, McCarthy will now call the offensive plays for the Cowboys cometh the next season, and his relationship with Dak Prescott will be key in determining the success the pair can conjure up. The head coach also has the backing of owner Jerry Jones who gave him his vote of confidence despite their failure this season.
