Aged 80, Jerry Jones is not only one of the biggest names in the NFL, but he is also one of the most influential people in the USA. With a net worth of over $11 billion, Jones is the owner of the Dallas Cowboys, the biggest sports team in the country. Jones is the trendsetter for the rest of the NFL teams and every of his action has a deep impact on how things are supposed to work.

“The Cowboys are America,” Jones said when he bought the team in 1989, and in no way, the statement isn’t valid. The Cowboys, despite having not won the Super Bowl since 1996, are the biggest team in the league and draws TV ratings like no other team. Hence it is important for Jones to set a right trend but to date, he hasn’t ever done something for the Blacks.

For starters, the Cowboys haven’t had a black head coach in their history. This can be associated with the fact that there are only three Black full-time head coaches and if this has to change, Jones could be the one to lead the way with the Cowboys.

“What frustrates me most, he is in such a position, and such a leader, [that] if he would take a stronger stance, he could be the force of change. He could be that guy that pushes the NFL in another direction,” Dale Hansen said, a retired Dallas sportscaster known for his bold critiques of Jones who believes that the Cowboys owner has all the power to bring a change for good, but doesn’t.

“I think there are a half a dozen NFL teams that would follow that lead. … He’s had the opportunity not only to change the Dallas Cowboys but the NFL and America,” he added.

Jerry Jones’ past acts of racism

On September 9, 1957, Jones was part of a pivotal civil rights movement, but in a negative way. President Dwight D. Eisenhower dispatched federal troops to escort the trailblazing Black students past the spitting hordes. Several events of protest and atrocities against the blacks followed over the next few weeks.

A young Jerry Jones could also be pictured in one of the photos wearing a striped shirt, craning for a better view. He later acknowledged his presence on that specific day too when he was just 14. This photo indicates Jones’ racist thoughts as a teenager and by the looks of it, not much has changed since the day when this picture was taken.
