“We’re talking about the future, can’t imagine having to send my kid to school”: Dak Prescott shares his thoughts on the shootings in Texas

Dak Prescott and Demarcus Lawrence expressed their shock over the horrific shootings at Uvalde

The Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott had something deep to say, this shooting had a profound impact on him. “Honestly, it makes me fearful to have children, and that’s not right. I don’t care if you’re an athlete or not, we’re talking about children. We’re talking about the future. I mean, I don’t have kids and can’t imagine having to send my kid to school with that anxiety.” Prescott said to USA Today, indicating that these shootings have him worried about being a father even though he does not have a child yet. It really must be horrific even to think of something like this happening to your child.

The gunman who committed this heinous act was Salvador Ramos, an 18-year-old from Uvalde, he acted alone and ended up being killed by a Border Patrol agent who rushed into the school without waiting for backup as he feared more kids would be killed.

Demarcus Lawrence, the defensive end for the Cowboys also echoed Dak’s sentiments. He does not feel comfortable sending his kids to school anymore, the 2x Pro Bowler said he immediately reached out to his wife after the shooting to ask if his kids were back home safe.

“This is something that’s been happening for weeks… and now it hits an elementary school and we decide to turn on our TV and act like something is different? I feel like we are sitting back and looking on the outside and saying, ‘It’s not my family so it has nothing to do with me.’ and, deep down, it hurts.” Lawrence said expressing his sadness and grief over this matter.

Dak and Lawrence were among the many athletes who spoke out after these shootings that were the deadliest at a US grade school ever since a gunman killed 20 kids and six adults at Sandy Hook Elementary in Connecticut nearly a decade ago.

Both, the Cowboys as well as the Texans release statements showing their support to the community and families of the victims. “The entire Dallas Cowboys organization grieves alongside the community of Uvalde and all of those affected by today’s tragic event, as we mourn the loss of innocent life, our hearts and prayers are with the victims’ families, loved ones, faculty, and staff of Robb Elementary.”

The Head Coach for the Cowboys, Mike McCarthy who has a daughter in grade four got very emotional while talking about this incident during a press conference on Wednesday, he began to tear up. “We’ve got to be better, there has to be a better way. We know there’s a better way. And we need to do things to make it better. To not protect the future of our community is tragic. It makes me sick like I’m sure it does everybody.”
