Texas is a pure football state, so it is not surprising that the Dallas Cowboys are often referred to as ‘America’s team’. However, the Cowboys may not be the only team based out of Texas for long. Mayor Eric Johnson responded to a tweet from NFL on CBS asking which city should be picked for a league expansion team.
Mayor Johnson makes a rather compelling case for Texas to have another expansion team, “The answer is Dallas. Why? We are about to pass the Chicago metro and become #3 metro in the US, which would make us the largest US metro WITHOUT 2 teams,” Johnson refers to the situation in Los Angeles and New York.
“The answer is Dallas”, Mayor Johnson makes his case
He went on to add, “Football is king here. Dallas needs an expansion team and we would be able to sustain 2 NFL teams better than LA or NY.” The Mayor is spot on, LA and NY both have two teams, they are much smaller in comparison to Dallas, and the entire state of Texas eats, sleeps, and bleeds football. The Mayor’s plans may however remain just plans.
The biggest reason for this is the owner of the Dallas Cowboys Jerry Jones, who would hate the idea of having to share Jerry World with another team based out of Dallas. Let alone the arena, Jerry would not be happy sharing the existing fanbase of the Cowboys with another franchise.
“We can promise you the Jerry Jones family has no interest in “sharing” the Cowboys audience in DFW, let alone in Texas, ever consider why San Antonio doesn’t have a team? Maybe it’s because San Antonio fans are already Cowboys fans, and the Dallas franchise likes to keep it that way,” Fan Nation’s Mike Fisher points out.
Now in addition to that imagine if the new team ends up performing better than the Cowboys, that would be Jones’s worst nightmare. However, the owner does not have an issue if the NFL were to establish a team in Southern Dallas, which would result in the team being much less of a threat to the Cowboys as it would be in the AFC division.
Only time will tell if Dallas will get two teams or not.
