The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are currently in a dilemma as they prepare to choose their starting QB next season. In Hindsight, the second-round draft pick Kyle Trask will get the spot as he worked with the legendary QB Tom Brady.
After Brady retired, the Bucs bought in Baker Mayfield from the LA Rams to replace him. However, now it seems like there is a QB battle going on in the Tampa Bay camp. Both Trask and Mayfield will have their eye on the starting spot for various reasons.
Bucs OC Dave Canales recently spoke about the intense competition between both the quality QBs and he believes respect for each other will be important to them.
“I think it’s partly just respecting the team, respecting what’s best for everyone, and then also respecting Kyle’s process,” Canales said, via JoeBucsFan.com. “You know, he comes in as the second-round pick with high hopes. Obviously, what a great thing, Tom Brady’s been here, so he’s been able to learn from him. But at the same time he’s worked really hard to try to have an opportunity to show what he can do.”
Canales believes Kyle Trask has worked really hard when serving as the backup to Brady. Not only that, but the young QB also demands a starting spot and will want to earn his own name. However, Canales also believes that Baker Mayfield would love to be the starter and there is a good chance he could be it.
Dave Canales believes Baker Mayfield will work hard for the starting spot over Kyle Trask
The QB competition in Tampa Bay is getting hated and even OC Dave Canales doesn’t have a firm answer. The Bucs OC believes that Baker Mayfield can also get the starting spot due to his own reasons.
Kyle Trask and Mayfield have been equally average throughout their recent practice session and their battle will be interesting to watch. According to Canales, Mayfield has a reason to prove himself after being released from 2 NFL teams and maybe he will fight harder for the starting place.
“On the flip side, too, I think Baker, would he love to be named the starter?” Canales said. “I’m sure. But Baker also knows this is his road back, too. From Cleveland to Carolina and L.A., you know, he’s been told, ‘No,’ a couple of times.”
Currently, the main goal for the Bucs will be to get a QB ready for their week 1 showdown against the Minnesota Vikings on the 10th of September and it can be either Kyle Trask or Baker Mayfield.
