Emmitt Smith is a retired RB who used to play for the Dallas Cowboys. The 53-year-old played 15 seasons in the NFL before finally hanging up his cleats for good. In those 15 seasons, Smith reached legendary status in the league and is regarded as one of the best in his position.
However, every good thing has a downside and for Smith, it was the multiple concussions that he suffered throughout his time in the NFL. Football is one of the most physical sports in the world and is extremely risky, even with the new regulations adopted in recent years.
Smith confessed to being diagnosed with two concussions throughout his career. However, the former Cowboys RB believes he has suffered many more concussions than that.
The former Cardinals RB recently featured for an interview with the Palm Beach Post and spoke about the dangers of CTE in modern football. Smith also shed a light on the recent injury sustained by Tua Tagovailoa that shook the entire NFL world.
“When you see all the CTE stuff that’s come out, I‘d be naïve to think if I keep living, I’ll have a normal life going forward,” Emmitt Smith stated. “That’s why I respect the Jim Browns of the world, Tony Dorsetts and the guys that came before me. They’re a good reflection where I’m headed as I age. To escape the game completely free, I’d be a little naïve. So far, I’m good.”
Emmitt Smith has advice for Dolphins QB Tua Tagovailoa
Tua Tagovailoa suffered two concussions in back-to-back games last season. The Dolphins QB was seen collapsing on the field after getting hit. It was later found out that he was diagnosed with CTE. The NFL was under scrutiny after that.
Emmitt Smith spoke extensively about Tua’s grim situation last season. The legendary RB believes that concussions are part of the game. However, he also confessed that he had never been concussed like Tua throughout his career.
Smith also had solid advice for the young QB, who is looking to be in the NFL for many more years to come. “I’ll tell you right now I don’t know a football player who hasn’t had at least one (concussion),” Smith said. “We all get dinged. I’ve had two that I know of, that I can recall when they were. I also can tell you there’s a number of times I got hit and had to shake my head a couple of times to get the cobwebs out and get back focused. It’s part of the game.”
Emmitt Smith is a huge fan of the Cowboys and still lives in Dallas. The legendary RB was highly critical of his favorite team when they lost to the 49ers in the playoffs divisional round game.
