The Washington Commanders made an outstanding move in the 2023 off-season as they landed the former Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy as their new offensive coordinator. Bieniemy has been making headlines for a long time since he couldn’t land a head coach job in the league despite his impressive resume.

Eric Bieniemy has an impressive resume as a coaching staff in the NFL that spans over 15 years. Bieniemy used to be the running backs coach of the Minnesota Vikings when running back Adrian Peterson dominated the league day in and day out. Furthermore, for the last five years, the talented coach was coaching Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs’ offense.

Bieniemy was the offensive coordinator for the Chiefs from 2018 to 2022. He has won two Super Bowl rings with the Chiefs and is responsible for one of the most dynamic offensive units in the league’s history. However, Bieniemy struggles to land a head coaching job in the league for unknown reasons. He has been interviewed by many teams to be the head coach in the last couple of years, but he hasn’t been offered a head coach gig yet.

His struggles to get a head coach job at an NFL franchise have been a massive storyline in sports media. Many experts accused NFL owners of being racist for not hiring Eric Bieniemy. It has been one of the major controversies in the league and now Bieniemy has decided to get away from the shadows of Patrick Mahomes and ingenious HC Andy Reid to prove himself in the league.

During the 2023 off-season, Eric Bieniemy accepted the offensive coordinator job of the Washington Commanders after failing to secure a head coach job for the second consecutive year.

The potential future head coach has impressed the Commanders front office and the players and has made a good impression. “He’s very hard on us, and he sets a high standard,” the Commanders QB Sam Howell said on Thursday according to Fox Sports. “But that’s what we want.”

Bieniemy wouldn’t have the luxury of working with superstars like Patrick Mahomes and Andy Reid. The 53-year-old would be working with second-year quarterback Sam Howell and veteran head coach Ron Rivera.

“The thing that I want them to understand while we’re out there is maximizing every single opportunity that we have, so yes, you have to create energy. We have to bring that energy so our players can feed off of that so they can be excited about the opportunities that lie ahead,” Bieniemy told reporters on Thursday about his coaching style.

The experienced coaching staff has a brand new challenge in front of him. It could be a make-or-break season for the veteran coach, and if he produces good results with Howell as his quarterback, he could certainly land a head coaching gig in the near future.
