“He makes some big throws”: Geno Smith will officially be starting the preseason for the Seattle Seahawks

Geno Smith in action for the Seahawks
The Seattle Seahawks face a hurdle at the quarterback position after nearly a decade as with the departure of Russell Wilson, the team has had to turn to backup quarterbacks to help carry it this season. The battle for the starter’s role has been between veteran backup Geno Smith and Drew Lock, Head Coach Pete Carroll for the most part stated that he will do what is best for the team and that they are yet to decide upon a starter.
The latest news from the HC seems to indicate otherwise as reportedly Geno Smith will be starting off the Seahawks’ preseason run against the Pittsburgh Steelers. The preseason could be the time when Pete Carroll will take a look at both of his quarterbacks and then take a final call upon whom to make the starter for the regular season.
Geno Smith currently has the edge over Drew Lock in the Seattle Seahawks QB battle

HC Carroll in a press conference stated, “He’s still going with the 1s and he’s gonna start the game this weekend, he had a very solid day today, made some big throws today,” the coach spoke on Smith clearly indicating that he was rather impressed with what he saw from the QB. Smith has had a bit of an edge over Drew Lock as he is familiar with the Seahawks playbook and he has been behind Russell Wilson for years, it is maybe his time now.
Drew Lock is no scrub either, he has seemed to pick the team’s offense up extremely well and during the team’s practice game held on Saturday, Lock impressed all by making some impressive short throws and not repeating the same mistakes that he made as a Denver Bronco.
Carroll liked what he saw from Lock as well, “I think it was his most solid performance. He’s had really good days, too, but I think that was the best one under the circumstances, I really liked his poise and his comfort in the pocket, handling stuff, adjustments, calls he had to make at the line of scrimmage, all of that he handled very well.”
Geno Smith refused to comment on the quarterback situation in Seattle and reiterated that whatever the coaching staff decides, he will be accepting such a decision. “I don’t want to give too much information out here, I think you guys will be able to get that information from the coach. But looking forward to this week coming up with the game. We’ll let those deciding factors happen as they may,” Smith concluded.
Seattle will open their season against Russell Wilson and the Broncos, that is one game that Pete Carroll will be looking forward to winning. The QB competition in Seattle has resulted in Geno Smith getting more reps that Drew Lock as he knows the system well. Lock has improved by leaps and bounds but Pete is going with what he knows is tried and tested.
“It’s gonna take some time, we need the opportunities to present themselves as we go, and we try to create them all the time. We’re accumulating a lot of information for us, and it’s working out well,” Carroll concludes.
The preseason will determine who the starter will be and there is a possibility that Carroll may decide to surprise all by trading for a more experienced veteran quarterback such as Jimmy G if he feels that his current QBs are not up to par.
