The San Francisco 49ers hit the jackpot when they drafted the Iowa State QB Brock Purdy as the very last pick in the 2022 NFL Draft. The Niners might have just drafted him to be a backup QB for their 2021 third-overall pick Trey Lance, but Purdy ended up becoming more than what the 49ers bargained for.

Purdy started the 2022 season as a third stinger in the depth chart behind Lance and Jimmy Garoppolo. But after both of those quarterbacks went down with unfortunate injuries, Purdy was forced into action during the Niners’ week 12 matchup against the Miami Dolphins. And after taking over the starting QB job, Mr. Irrelevant surprised everyone took over the league by storm.

The 49ers, under their third-string rookie QB Brock Purdy, went on a fairy-tale run and made it all the way to the NFC Championship game. However, the Cinderella story came to an end after Purdy suffered a severe arm injury during the first quarter of the NFC title game, which eventually led to the 49ers’ loss against the Eagles.

Just when the Niners thought they found their QB, the injury gods struck again and took the joy out of the Niners Nation. But that’s in the past. Now the question is how severe is Purdy’s injury? Will he be able to play in 2023?

After suffering a severe arm injury in the NFC Championship game, the 49ers QB Purdy went through elbow surgery in the second week of March. Purdy was recently seen in public wearing an arm brace which looked like he had a robotic arm.

Purdy is currently going through rehab following the surgery but the 49ers QB claims that everything is “going as planned” and believes he can start throwing the football in about three months.

“The protocol is you start throwing at three months, but it all depends on how your therapy and your range of motion and everything goes up until that point,” Purdy said on Fox Sports radio. “There are definitely some boxes I have to check off first before I get to that point, but that’s the plan as of now.”

“I’m with a specialist out here who’s done this rehab on the elbow hundreds of thousands of times,” Purdy said. “He’s a baseball guy and they trust in him and everything is going as planned.”

If everything indeed goes as planned, Brock Purdy will be able to return to playing in 2023. Furthermore, the 49ers GM John Lynch has already revealed that Purdy has earned the right to be a starter. So, barring any setbacks in the recovery process, Purdy should be able to retain his starting QB job in San Francisco.
