“I was ashamed and embarrassed” Manti Te’o on sharing his story in a new Netflix Documentary
Manti Te’o is currently a free agent who played for the San Diego Chargers until 2021. The Heisman trophy finalist had an interesting past where he was involved in a catfishing scandal in his college days.
Manti had a great story, he led Notre Dame to the national championship games after recovering from two traumas. the death of his grandmother and his girlfriend Lenny Kekua. But there’s a twist, his girlfriend didn’t exist. Ronaiah Tuiasosopo, nicknamed Naya, had developed an online identity as Kekua and carried on a relationship with Te’o. Manti didn’t find out about that relationship until December of that year.
There was an investigation conducted through which it was revealed publicly that the young linebacker was catfished. Manti teared up watching the film and got emotional.
“Just remembering those years and just being who I was at that time, the people that were around me, the love, the support, it was definitely an emotional experience,” Manti Te’o, told TIME in a Zoom interview Wednesday. “It was a healing experience.”
