After quite a legendary career in the NFL, Jason Witten retired with the distinction of the second-most receptions and receiving yards by a tight end in the history of the NFL. Now he has shifted to impart his knowledge to young aspiring football players, as a college football coach. And he has already scored a championship victory as a head coach.
In his third year in college football as the head coach of Argyle Liberty Christian, the former Dallas Cowboys tight end led his team to an undefeated 14-0 season record, paving their way to the championship title. The team faced off against the Austin Regents and secured a dominating 52-10 victory, bringing home the TAPPS Division II state championship, held in Waco.
Interestingly, both the sons of Witten, C.J., and Cooper are also in the team and have played a significant role in Liberty’s state Championship victory this season. According to MaxPreps, his younger son Cooper has recorded 50 tackles and three blocked kicks, while the elder C.J. led his team in the tackles.
With the legendary 16 seasons in the NFL, Witten retired in 2021 after 11 Pro Bowls, which remains the second highest by any tight end in the NFL. He was also awarded the Walter Payton Man of the Year in 2012.
Liberty Christians registered a dominating win against the Regents
In the state championship game, Regents kickstarted with a field goal and took the lead at 3-0. However, the Christians didn’t allow them to score above 10 points for the rest of the game. Before the game, in all three playoffs, Liberty made a combined score of 150-24 against their opponents. They continued the same track on Friday’s game.
Liberty’s junior running back Chase Garnett recorded the 27th touchdown of the season, with a 36-yard touchdown run. The sophomore Jett Haire intercepted a pass to half the Regents to regain the ball in his offense, near midfield. Taking advantage of the play, the quarterback Cole Welliver brought Liberty into the lead with 14-3 after a touchdown connection with Brady Janusek.
The duo hit another touchdown in the end zone, increasing the score to 21-3. Welliver threw his third touchdown, his 50th of this season, leading the Christians at 28-3. With the final few seconds remaining in the first half of the game, Cooper Witten made a big catch, setting senior kicker Michael Stump for a field goal and taking the lead at 31-3.
Just like how Liberty dominated the field in the first half, they did the same in the second half, leading to an eventual win of 52-10 over the Regents and winning the TAPPS Division II championship.
