In the 2023 off-season, the Las Vegas Raiders addressed their need in the quarterback position by signing the former San Francisco 49ers QB Jimmy Garoppolo to a 3-year deal. However, it seems like they need a new plan for a signal-caller now since Garoppolo might not even play a single snap for the Raiders ever.
Back in March, the Raiders mysteriously postponed Jimmy Garoppolo’s introductory press conference without any clarification and claimed it wasn’t any big deal. But a recent report by ESPN has confirmed that the press conference was delayed due to the former 49ers QB Garoppolo failing his physicals.
Garoppolo apparently still hasn’t fully recovered from the foot injury he suffered during the 2022 regular season. The 2-time Super Bowl Champion underwent foot surgery immediately after signing with the Raiders back in March but still hasn’t fully recovered from it. Amidst this situation, new details acquired from Jimmy G’s contract have revealed that a waiver has been added to his deal after failing physicals.
According to reports, his contract was reworked due to a “Preexisting medal and middle cuneiform and a fracture of the base of the second metatarsal in the Player’s left foot.”
Part of the waiver also discloses that the 31-year-old QB acknowledges the dangers in continuing his career with an injury and a re-injury would result in, “Player physically unable to perform the services that would be required of Player by an NFL Player Contract.”

Jimmy Garoppolo could lose millions of dollars due to injuries

The reworked contract of the newly signed Raiders QB Jimmy Garoppolo also discloses that the veteran quarterback has waived all claims against the Raiders, the league, and anyone else who could be responsible for anything related to his injuries.
Garoppolo and the Raiders originally agreed to a contract with a signing bonus of $11.25 million and a 2023 base salary of $11.25 million. However, due to the foot injury, the deal has been reworked and the Raiders have removed the signing bonus entirely from the contract.
With that, the entire $22.5 million has become the base salary of Garoppolo for the 2023 season. The quarterback will not get any of it unless he passes the physical exam before the start of the 2023 season.
Besides, the Raiders also hold the power to cut him at any point in the off-season for injury-related reasons. The new contract details have revealed that Garoppolo might never play a snap for the Raiders and might never get paid a single dollar by them.
