Football players earn a lot of money, some more than others. But it’s also a team game; only one player cannot win by themselves. To create a team worthy of winning the championship, the franchise needs cash to acquire better players. That’s the reason why Bengals running back Joe Mixon agreed to take a pay cut, stating he felt the “sacrifice” was needed.

“I see what we’re trying to build, and to keep other players, sometimes you have to sacrifice,” The 27-year-old revealed after Wednesday’s training camp that he prefers looking at the big picture. “This year, we can potentially be the Super Bowl team.”

Throughout the offseason, the Bengals hierarchy was unsure whether to keep the Pro Bowler. His staying on the roster meant his salary would hit $4.3 million against the cap in 2023. However, the Cincinnati franchise is keeping the dynamic RB.

Mixon and the Bengals last month sat down and agreed to restructure his contract, which he signed in 2020. His contract includes $4.1 million in guaranteed money and $2 million in potential incentives. The official website revealed that the revised deal meant his value decreased by $3 million from 2022.

Joe Mixon follows Aaron Rodgers as the veteran quarterback decided to take a $35 million pay cut in his new contract with the New York Jets. When asked why he came to such a conclusion, the Super Bowl winner replied, “Big names move at the trade deadline. I wanted to make sure that if somebody valuable came available, we’d be able to get him.”

This announcement comes as the running back market is boiling after several complaints about the devaluation of the position.

Is Joe Mixon prohibited from giving interviews?

The ever-robust Joe Mixon has seldom attended media interviews for some time now. He may have reached the Super Bowl on the field, but off it, he has been involved in two gun-related cases. In March of this year, a teenager was shot in the foot in Mixon’s backyard. He was not on the suspect list, and later the police did indict a man for felonies.

However, he was not so lucky with the next one. In April, Mixon allegedly pointed a gun at a woman during a road rage incident and was later booked for an aggravated misdemeanor. He is due to appear in court on August 14.

Since then, he has declined to participate in any interviews until the Bengals training camp began. Moreover, a team spokesperson said he will not be attending any press conferences until the commencement of the regular season.
