Julian Edelman is a former NFL player who played as a wide receiver for the New England Patriots for more than a decade. During his remarkable career, Edelman had plenty of memorable moments while catching passes from Tom Brady. However, one of his iconic moments doesn’t have to do with him playing as a slot receiver. Edelman, who played as a quarterback during his college days, once threw an improv touchdown pass against the Philadelphia Eagles back in 2019.
And now, almost 4 years after that moment, Edelman has shared a hilarious story behind it during his recent appearance on Travis and Jason Kelce’s The New Heights podcast.
“That wasn’t a designed play,” Edelman started to narrate the story behind his second career touchdown pass. “Night before the game, we’re doing walkthroughs and sh*t, I get the ball and we play with this little lacrosse ball in like the hotel thing and I get it and I’m like, ‘Hey yo Philly’ and I hit Phil [Dorsett]. [Josh] McDaniels goes, ‘Don’t you f**king think about that’ and I go like ‘Coach, what if he’s wide open? He goes ‘Just throw it to the f**king screen.'”
Edelman then went on to hilariously narrate what happened on the field during the play. “So, we go the game; we couldn’t run the ball at all; we couldn’t do anything. We had to throw something out there,” said Edelman. “I forgot who it was, but he broke through the lead blocker that was supposed to block for me. I saw Phil out of the corner of my eye, and I f**king zing it to him. He gets knocked out, but he scores a touchdown.”
The former Pats receiver went on to reveal that despite his warnings, OC McDaniels was happy with the result and yelled, “You’re f**king dangerous, Maverick!” to Edelman while celebrating the Tuddy.

Julian Edelman’s touchdown pass against the Eagles
The story about the improv touchdown pass Julian Edelman talked about on the New Heights podcast happened during a Week 11 matchup between the Patriots and the Eagles back in 2019.
Both teams were struggling on offense, and the Patriots decided to dig deep into their bag of tricks at the beginning of the third quarter. The Pats QB, Tom Brady, threw a backward pass to Edelman, who was supposed to toss a screen pass to the running back.
However, the play blew up, and what could’ve been a disaster turned into a touchdown pass thanks to Edelman’s quick thinking. Edelman threw a deep pass to wide receiver Phillip Dorsett, who caught the ball to score the touchdown. That was the only passing touchdown by the Pats in that game, but they managed to win the game with a final score of 17-10.
