After suffering from a grave injury in the right index finger, Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert has been officially ruled out for the remaining four games of this season. The quarterback made the second-longest active streak of starting 62 consecutive games, after finally sustaining a season-ending injury.
Herbert is undergoing surgery to heal his broken index finger on his throwing hand, as announced by the Chargers. He sustained in the Sunday Night Football game against the Denver Broncos.
The quarterback had to leave the game in the middle of the second quarter, after throwing for a pass on fourth-and-2 at the opponent’s 29-yard line, which was ruled incomplete. As Herbert left the field, Easton Stick took over him late in the first half, leading to an eventual loss of 24-7.
Herbert logged only 9 out of 17 passes for 96 yards along with an interception in the Sunday Night Football game. He was initially ruled questionable by the team, as not having the proper examination of his injury. As reported by Ian Rapoport and Mike Garafolo:
Coach Brandon Staley said they would do what’s best for him long-term. This is it.
In his fourth season with the Chargers, quarterback Herbert recorded 3,134 passing yards with 20 touchdowns and seven interceptions, in the last 13 games. The No. 6 overall pick is 30-32 as a starter since being drafted in 2020.
Who is replacing Justin Herbert in the remaining four games?
The Chargers’ starter is being replaced by former North Dakota State University quarterback Easton Stick. He also took over the field after Herbert left due to his injury, completing 13 out of his 24 passes for 179 yards.
As being drafted by the Chargers in 2019 as the fifth-round pick, Stick has been with them ever since. During his time with the team, he has played two regular-season games before starter Herbert’s injury.
Now as his team needs him again, Stick will again replace Herbert in the remaining four games of this season. It’s not much of a crisis for the Chargers as they are most likely out of the playoffs. With the 5-8 standings, the team currently is ranked 12th in the AFC.
