“I have beef with them”: San Francisco 49ers HC Kyle Shanahan is STRONGLY against the NFL’s sideline hat rules

The NFL has had a history of imposing some rather unreasonable rules such as the helmet rule where it banned players from wearing certain kinds of helmets, this time the NFL’s latest rule targets the sideline staff, and one Head Coach, in particular, is not happy about it. The first image that comes to anyone’s mind when they hear the name Kyle Shanahan is his portrait face with a hat on. Hats have become synonymous with his name but now the league may literally be after his crown.
The San Francisco 49ers HC did not hold back against the NFL’s latest rule during a recent radio interview. Kyle is not happy that the league is poking its nose into what coaches are allowed to wear on the sidelines. He is known for wearing a particular style of hat, a flat-brimmed one in particular and he is not happy about having to let it go.
“It’s a tough issue”: Kyle Shanahan can no longer wear his staple hat on the sidelines
At times we may meet some people who may be bothered by what may seem to us as rather minor things and the hat subject is a sensitive one for Kyle Shanahan. “I have such beef with (the league) right now, it’s a tough issue going on. They won’t let me pick out my own one. They won’t let me wear any one that’s from a different year, so I can’t wear an older one,” the HC stated.
Shanahan has been accustomed to wearing hats since 2019, as a matter of fact, he worked with New Era to design an exclusive hat for him. The hate was called the “Scarlett Shanahan Square Trucker Snapback Adjustable Hat,” if you have never heard about it, we do not blame you, the name is a bit too long for a hat and it costs $32.99 but it was made for Kyle and if he’s happy then that is all that matters.
The red hat may have been the subject of memes in the past but many view it as a symbol of luck for the HC. The very first year that he sported the hat, the San Francisco 49ers went to the Super Bowl, so now you do get why he is annoyed that he will not be able to sport it any longer.
The NFL’s rules dictate that a coach cannot sport a hat from a previous year, which means the lucky hat has outlived its time on the sideline. He will have to wear a brand new one designed this year, “I’ve got to wear the new ones that they give this year and unfortunately, there’s none I like wearing. Hopefully, we can figure it out or wait until Salute to Service,” Shanahan adds remaining adamant that there is only one cap that he will ever consider sporting.
Kyle Shanahan risks being fined by the NFL and the coach knows that this is a possibility, “I don’t want to go too hard and get fined or anything, but trust me, I’m upset about it,” he concluded.
The 49ers have had quite the history when it comes to beef with the NFL over sideline apparel. In 2005, the then HC Mike Nolan wished to sport a suit on the sideline as a mark of respect to his father, Dick Nolan, who had coached the same NFL team from 1968 to 1975 and the league outright rejected him.
However, it took a while and a bit of coaxing until the NFL decided to go soft on him and allowed him to wear a suit for the 49ers’ home games in 2006 and 2007 respectively. Kyle Shanahan is looking for the league to go soft on him as well but it is highly doubtful as Mike’s rationale for sporting a suit is much more acceptable than his. Only time will tell if the HC will get his way or if the NFL will reign supreme once again.
