Lane Johnson, the right tackle of the Philadelphia Eagles is one of the best offensive linemen in the NFL. He has been in the news for all the right reasons so far. However, Johnson was caught committing a false start penalty against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Monday Night Football. The interesting thing is, he got away with the penalty.
The officials for the Eagles vs. Buccaneers game were the same as those who officiated the Jaguars vs. Kansas City Chefs game last week. The same referees that missed Johnson’s false start against the Buccaneers had flagged Chiefs offensive tackle Jawaan Taylor for it against the Jaguars.
Chiefs’ head coach Andy Reid asked for more consistency in calling false start penalties insinuating that the NFL referees have an eye on Taylor. “They’ve got an eye on him. They better keep an eye on everybody else too. It’s to the point of being ridiculous. They got their point proved now out there to the world, so let’s make sure we’re staying consistent.” Reid said.
The officials failed to call penalties on Taylor for lining up way behind the scrimmage line during the Chiefs’ week 1 matchup against the Detroit Lions which created a lot of buzz on social media. Johnson has been accused of falsely starting a number of times with the referees not pay heed to it. It will be interesting to see Johnson’s approach in the Eagles’ next game.
Fans react to Lane Johnson falsely starting against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Lane Johnson’s false starts are the talk of the NFL world. In the Philadelphia Eagles‘ Monday Night Football game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Johnson was caught starting a tad bit early with officials failing to call a penalty on him.
The crew that officiated the Eagles-Bucs game also officiated the Kansas City Chiefs-Jacksonville Jaguars game last week. During that game, Chefs’ offensive tacle Jawaan Taylor was flagged for starting early. Fans on social media have reacted to an old video of Johnson committing a false start against the San Francisco 49ers slamming the officials for not calling a penalty on Johnson.
Johnson was drafted fourth overall in the 2013 NFL Draft by the Eagles. He has been with the team since then and was part of the Eagles’ Super Bowl winning team in 2017. Since being drafted, Johnson has consistently performed at a very high level and is considered one of the best offensive linemen in the league. It will be interesting to see if the referees start to call penalties on Johnson going forward, if he keeps committing them.
