Following a stellar rookie season, where Mac Jones made it to the Pro Bowl and led the New England Patriots to the playoffs, the former Alabama quarterback has been a huge letdown in the next 2 seasons. In his third year, Jones has been having one of the worst campaigns of his short career. Amidst this, reports suggest the Patriots quarterback has lost the support of his locker room.
One team source estimated that at least 80% of the Patriots’ locker room is out on Jones. Another said the ‘vast majority’ of players are done with him. The lack of belief spreads to both sides of the ball.Wrote The Boston Herald’s Andrew Callahan.
As previously mentioned, Jones is having one of the worst campaigns of his career yet. Jones’ untimely interceptions have cost the Patriots multiple games. He has thrown 10 interceptions through the first 10 weeks of the ongoing NFL season. Furthermore, he has been benched three times including in the Patriots’ week 10 loss against the Indianapolis Colts in Germany.
The former first-round pick registered only 170 passing yards and threw a critical interception against the Colts. As a result, he was benched in favor of their second-string quarterback Bailey Zappe in the final few minutes of the game.
This is not the first time someone has reported that Jones has lost the support of his locker room. Throughout the off-season, there were multiple reports suggesting that the locker room was split between Jones and Zappe. And now, with his starting role in question, Jones reportedly lost the trust of his entire locker room as both offensive and defensive players have given up on the 25-year-old quarterback.
Bill Belichick uncommitted to Mac Jones continuing as the starter
Following the brutal last-minute loss against the Colts, the Patriots’ head coach Bill Belichick remained uncommitted to Mac Jones continuing as the starting quarterback of the New England-based football team.
On Monday, Belichick told the reports that he would look at and evaluate every single position and go forward with the best available. It seems like there could be a change in the team, especially at the quarterback position.
Currently, the Patriots have one of the worst records in the entire league with 2 wins and 8 losses. They have a much-needed bye in week 11, which they would use to regroup and reload with the best options available. After their bye week, the Pats are scheduled to take on fellow strugglers, the New York Giants in their week 12 matchup.
