“He specifically didn’t want that”: Cowboys RB Marion Barber’s cause of death remains a mystery as family denies permission for CTE study

Recently, former Dallas Cowboys running back Marion Barber III was found dead in his apartment by the Frisco Police department, he was 38 years old and he played a total of seven seasons in the NFL and six of them were as a Cowboy. His family was shocked by his untimely demise and they are now preparing for his funeral while the RB’s youngest brother Thomas was supposed to get married on the 10th of June, Barber’s official birthday when he would have turned 39.

The wedding is reported to go on while there will be a special memorial service in Minneapolis on the 22nd of June, his father told reporters that the time and venue of this service are not yet determined. As per his older brother, the coroner has not been able to determine the exact cause of death yet, the investigation is still ongoing. Barber’s body was found in a decomposed condition, making things harder for the coroner. The RB was found dead in his bathroom and his body was likely there for days with the hot water running. Police had to break into his apartment in order to do a welfare check after residents of his apartment complained of water leaking from the unit.

Marion Barber III did not want his brain donated towards CTE research following his death

Going by the initial reports, his elder brother has stated, “They are just using tissue as they dig further into the cause of death, they are ruling out things. They haven’t seen any trauma, no foul substances in his body. His lungs were in working order. The heart and veins around the heart were good. They are ruling things out. Right now, we are just waiting.” His body is expected to be flown to Minneapolis on Thursday in order to prepare for the funeral.

Marion had suffered multiple mental health issues ever since he retired from the NFL in 2012, he had to be hospitalized twice due to mental health evaluations. His family has decided that they will not be donating his brain for CTE research and as a result, there will not be any extensive autopsy keeping the RBs wishes in mind.

He was real specific in his will that he didn’t want that, we are going to respect that. But in the condition, his body was in, according to the examiner, that probably would have been a moot point because of the decomposition.” The family has been overwhelmed by the amount of love and support they have received from fans, former teammates, other NFL players, and the Dallas Cowboys.

“I know it feels good to us to know that he was loved and respected that much, the responses we have seen just warms your heart. That is what my family remembers. We appreciate the Cowboys as an organization. It is really confronting to know he had that kind of support. Hopefully, by midweek, we will have something a little more definitive in terms of a venue for his services. We got to take care of my baby and get him married off this week.”

We share our condolences and extend our thoughts and prayers to the Barber family during this hard time.
