Marquez Valdes-Scantling had the chance to be the hero of the night by stealing the win under the Philadelphia Eagles‘ nose on Week 11’s Monday night game, but he fluffed his lines. With just under 2 minutes left on the clock at 2 and 10, Patrick Mahomes chose to go deep into Eagles territory.
He launched one from the halfway line, aimed at Valdes-Scantling. The wide receiver managed to outpace his maker, Eagles cornerback Bradley Roby. As the pass came ever so close, the 29-year-old dived forward to gain a bit more leverage.
He managed to connect with the ball. However, it came loose from his grasp, and after a short juggle, it dropped to the ground, thus the pass was incomplete.
If Valdes-Scantling had not fumbled the ball, then the Chiefs would have had a third down at the 5-yard mark. They still had one time-out left, and if used, Wesley could have helped them take the lead. Unfortunately, the damage was done by then.
After the game, passing through the players’ tunnel, the WR was visibly frustrated, hitting his helmet to the side passage. The WR’s reaction was understandable considering his crucial drop.
Patrick Mahomes took the blame for the Marquez Valdes-Scantling drop
The Monday night game between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Philadelphia Eagles was a rematch of last season’s Super Bowl. Both sides went into the game with winning records and the hope of reaching the playoffs once more.
It was a war of attrition, as neither failed to take a commanding lead through the course of the game. The quarterbacks struggled to complete passes at regular intervals. Mahomes saw the ball more compared to Eagles Jalen Hurts. But he completed only 24 of his 43 attempted passes for just 177 yards and two touchdowns.
Hurts, on the other hand, only connected with his teammates 14 times for 150 yards while recording two touchdowns from 12 carries. Both quarterbacks threw one pick each, taking their tally to nine for the season. Yet the pivotal moment of the game was the dropped catch by Marquez Valdes-Scantling. However, during the post-match press conference, Mahomes took the blame on himself.
That one downfield—the Marquez one—didn't come away with the ball. I mean, I could have probably thrown it a bit short. He was that open, so you just go to continue to try to get better and better.
The Week 11 loss means the Kansas City Chiefs have now lost their third (7-3) game of the season. They slipped from the race as the first seed from the AFC and are now behind the Baltimore Ravens (8-3). Next, they will travel to Sin City and face the Las Vegas Raiders.
