With a bizarre ongoing season at 2-7, the Chicago Bears would face off against the Caroline Panthers on Thursday Night, this week. The game holds special status as it has ramifications for the 2024 NFL draft. The Bears, who own first-round picks of the Panthers, may likely prefer a tie in the game. But it’s highly improbable.
As the Bears’ starting quarterback, Justin Fields is injured, Tyson Bagent would likely take over as his replacement. However, it will not be decided until the last 24 hours of the game, as the team has written him down as doubtful.

With that being said, Bears head coach Matt Eberflus couldn’t be more vague about the whole thing. He confused the whole media during the final press conference of the game when he couldn’t come up with a proper response to quarterback Fields’ status in the TNF game, by saying both “doubtful” and “out” together.
When Eberflus was asked about the quarterback, he mentioned that Field hadn’t been cleared out medically, but then he said they had listed him as doubtful, rather than ruling him out for the Thursday game against the Panthers. The Bears’ head coach argued that the team is giving Fields time until the game to decide whether he is ready to play or not.
When reporters asked why the quarterback hadn’t been cleared out medically, Eberflus replied with very little details, and said the QB hadn’t gained the “full ability to function as a quarterback.” He finished the conference with a bizarre statement that Field was doubtful until he was officially ruled out, and there’s a nearly 51% chance that he would play against the Panthers.
Fan reaction to Matt Eberflus’ press conference
The press conference before the game made the fans doubt whether Eberflus is the head coach or not because this is most certainly very likely for a coach to play a “cat-and-mouse game with the media.”
