The Dallas Cowboys fell to the Green Bay Packers in the Wildcard Round. The outcome of the game was shocking for fans and critics alike as the Cowboys had every advantage possible heading into the game. The 48-32 loss gave rise to a lot of questions about the team, it has put Jerry Jones on his feet as he will now be forced to take a call on the future of Mike McCarthy as the Head Coach.
Despite having one more year to go on his contract, the buzz around league circles is that Mike McCarthy is as good as gone. However, a report from Sports Illustrated suggests that the head coach will have to persuade Jerry Jones that he deserves to stay on. He is scheduled to meet Jones later this week, the owner of America’s team had said after the game that he has not thought about McCarthy’s future and that he needs some time to process it.
This is why the HC’s meeting with Jones is more likely to be “like a job interview” rather than a meeting where McCarthy just briefs Jones on what went wrong for the team. He will be fighting for his job and explaining how the team which went 12-5 managed to blow their best shot to make a deep playoff run. After all, this loss has reflected negatively on Jerry Jones as his credibility has been impacted. He was strutting around praising his team and McCarthy by saying, “He’s doing an outstanding job” and when he went up against his former team, he failed.
Mike McCarthy will have to be very convincing in his meeting with Jerry Jones if he intends to return as the Cowboys HC next season
It is not surprising that Jones would be treating the meeting as a job interview. There are a lot of coaches available in the league who have better credentials than McCarthy and more experience. Jim Harbaugh and Bill Belichick are the frontrunners. Why would Jones be adamant about sticking with McCarthy when he knows there are better options who can have an immediate impact on his team?
After the Cowboys’ loss, Jones had more media surrounding him than some of the players themselves. His reactions through the game went viral as he could not believe that Green Bay was dismantling the defense that was considered to be among the top in the NFL. “I don’t have any comments or questions or answers for how and why we didn’t do what we wanted tonight…This seems like the most painful (loss) because we all had such great expectations and we had hope for this team,” he said after the game.
While Jerry Jones remained mum on the future of Mike McCarthy, QB Dak Prescott expressed his faith in his HC.
He's been amazing. I've had the season that I've had because of him. This team has had the success that they've had because of him.Prescott said after the game.
The question is, would Jerry Jones listen to Dak Prescott after his performance against Green Bay? Granted, he threw for 400+ yards and had 3 touchdowns but that was late in the game, his two interceptions essentially marked the start of the downfall of the team. Moreover, when it comes to personnel, Jones prides himself in having autonomy over making those calls, he could ask Prescott for his thoughts but that would be for the sake of formality. By the end of this week, it is likely that there will be more clarity on the Cowboys’ HC situation but for now, Mike McCarthy remains on the hot seat.
