“He’s a ridiculous competitor,” Mike Tomlin on Pickett’s odds of starting in Week 1
The Pittsburgh Steelers‘ latest draft pick Kenny Pickett has been dubbed as the most pro-ready QB in the entire draft class, his newest HC Mike Tomlin in an interview on the NFL network had high praise for the quarterback and explained the reasoning behind selecting him as the Steelers first-round draft pick.
The team now has two quarterbacks who were drafted in the first round, the first being Mitchell Trubisky who was drafted by the Chicago Bears in 2017, and Kenny Pickett.
Mike Tomlin has high hopes for Kenny Pickett
Trubisky has been around the league a lot for a first-rounder, he is new to the Pittsburgh organization. Head Coach Mike Tomlin was asked about Pickett’s chances to be the starting QB in the first week of the season over Mason Rudolph and Mitch Trubisky.
“He certainly has a chance,” Tomlin said to Rich Eisen, he also added that Kenny Pickett is the most pro-ready QB in the entire draft. “I agree with that sentiment of his readiness from a professional perspective.”
The 20th pick in the NFL Draft has been groomed in Pittsburgh and he has also been compared to the likes of Dan Marino. Apart from breaking touchdown and passing records in Pittsburgh, he was also the only QB to be selected in the first round of the 2022 draft.
Quarterbacks who are first-rounders usually get the starting jobs in their first season, last season, however, was different as out of the five QBs that were drafted in the first round, only Trey Lance and Justin Fields did not start in the first week. If any team does not have a veteran QB with experience, the starting position will be given to the rookie QBs.
In the case of the Steelers, Mitchell Trubisky’s job is not safe. He is a decent QB but he will have to compete with Kenny Pickett for the starter’s job. Going by Tomlin’s description of Pickett being a “ridiculous competitor” who the team is “excited about putting him in the mix and watching him compete against Mitch and Mason,” we can expect to see him start. The coach also described his accuracy as “pro-level.”
Kenny Pickett when asked about his relationship with Mitchell Trubisky and Mason Rudolph had this to say, “Two great guys. I’m really looking forward to working with them, there’s comfort but there’s a job at hand and I know what I have to do. I know how to go about my business so I’m really excited to be here.”
