“One of the greatest coaches,” Patrick Mahomes defends ex-Chiefs OC Eric Bieniemy after heavy criticism from LeSean McCoy

The Kansas City Chiefs are the reigning world champions after they came up triumphant against the Philadelphia Eagles in the Super Bowl. One of the main architects of the Chiefs’ success in the recent past has been the exceptional backroom staff.

The Chiefs have one of the best offenses in the NFL as of now, and credit should be given to offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy for the work he’s put into the franchise. After the Super Bowl success though, Bieniemy moved onto a new chapter in his career and joined the Washington Commanders as the assistant head coach and offensive coordinator.

While many acknowledge the work Bieniemy has put into the offense for the Chiefs, former Chiefs running back LeSean McCoy gave a different opinion of him. Speaking on the Monday edition of Fox Sports 1’s program, McCoy questioned Eric Bieniemy’s importance to the offensive plays carried out by the Chiefs over the years.

He also opined that the 53-year-old will not be successful in his new venture, and it was only because of Andy Reid’s experience that the Chiefs performed exceptionally in the offense.

During Bieniemy’s first interaction with the media following his Commanders appointment, the OC was asked about McCoy’s criticism. Bieniemy chose the path of non-violence and offered a neutral answer.

Bieniemy said, “LeSean McCoy is a future Hall of Fame runner, ok. Everybody is entitled to their own position, comments, and how they feel. When it’s all said and done with, I think that’s all I have to say. He’s entitled to his own opinion. That’s life. You have good and you have bad.”

“It does not impact me in any way. One thing that you learn when you’re in this position, you have to learn to eliminate distractions. My job is to focus on the now. Everything outside these walls has no impact on Eric Bieniemy moving forward.”

Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, however, does not concur with LeSean McCoy’s views and launched a stoic defense of his former offensive coordinator on Twitter. The 2x NFL MVP winner vouched for Bieniemy while hailing him as one of the best coaches he’s ever played under.

“There should be no questions on how great of a man/coach Coach Bienemy is. His leadership has a direct impact on the player/person I am today! 10+ years learning under one of the greatest coaches of all time. And I cannot wait for him to continue to prove doubters wrong!” Mahomes wrote on a video featuring his team’s former offensive coordinator on Twitter.
