The Kansas City Chiefs led by their star quarterback Patrick Mahomes defeated the Joe Burrow led-Cincinnati Bengals in the AFC Championship game back in January. And now, nearly 6 months after the close game, it has come to light that the Chiefs QB Mahomes wanted the Bengals matchup despite seeing them as a tougher opponent than the Buffalo Bills led by Josh Allen.
In the Netflix documentary series ‘Quarterback, some behind-the-scenes clips revealed that Patrick Mahomes wanted to defeat Joe Burrow and the Bengals to put a stop to all the trash talks.
“I think the Bengals are better, but I think with all those injuries on the O-line so the Bills have a chance, I think we match up better versus the Bills but I want to play the Bengals, I mean just honestly. I mean I just want to play and we haven’t beaten them. I’m tired of them talking,” said Mahomes.
In the end, the Bengals defeated the Josh Allen-led Bills and qualified for the AFC Championship, where they faced the Kansas City-based football team. There were a lot of trash talks between the Chiefs and the Bengals heading to the AFC Championship game.
At the time, Joe Burrow had a perfect 3-0 record against the Chiefs, and he was undefeated at Arrowhead Stadium, which led to running back Joe Mixon dubbing the Chiefs’ home ground the “Burrowhead.”
Furthermore, Cincinnati Mayor Aftab Pureval also fueled the fire of the rivalry by saying the Chiefs’ 5-time Pro Bowl signal-caller Mahomes should take a paternity test to see whether Burrow is his father. The mayor received heavy backlash for his comments.
An injured Patrick Mahomes led the Chiefs to a victory against the Bengals
For the second year in a row, the Cincinnati Bengals, led by Joe Burrow, faced the Patrick Mahomes-led Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC Championship game. The game created a lot of excitement around the league because of all the trash talk heading into the matchup.
In the end, Mahomes, despite playing with an ankle injury, outplayed Burrow and led the AFC West champions to a victory against the Cincinnati-based franchise. Mahomes threw for 326 yards and two touchdowns in the game while playing hurt.
Burrow faced his first defeat against the Chiefs but still boasts a dominant 3-1 record. Again, both camps have been going back and forth with each other even in the off-season. They will once again face each other on New Year’s Eve matchup in the upcoming regular season.
