“I am set for life”: Patrick Mahomes is not flustered by the massive QB contracts in the NFL
Patrick Mahomes
The NFL seems to have become a hot bidding zone as the league is now witnessing a massive boom in terms of contracts handed out to players. Quarterbacks are benefitting the most out of this as they are breaking the bank with their ridiculous numbers, the latest QB to do it is Kyler Murray who signed a $230 million contract with the Cardinals. This increase in the base salary for the top quarterbacks happened as soon as Kansas City Chiefs offered Patrick Mahomes the biggest NFL contract ever.
The team offered Mahomes almost half a billion dollars for a 10-year period. He jumped at it and took it, after all, who would not? His contract not only ensures that he spends his prime as a Chief but also makes him much richer, his contract gave way to the Deshaun Watson deal where the Browns traded for Watson and offered him $230 million all guaranteed, which is a first in league history.

“Money is one thing but at the end, you look back upon Super Bowl rings”: Money is not as important as winning games and championships for Patrick Mahomes
Mahomes may have paved the way for these massive contracts but there ought to be some feeling within himself that if he had maybe held out longer, he was likely to get a bigger contract. He could have become much richer if he just decided to sign a short-term contract instead of locking himself in for 10 years.
It is also surprising because if you look at the quarterbacks being offered 200+ million and compare their achievements with Mahomes, the Chiefs QB eclipses every one of them.
However, all the other quarterbacks’ deals mean nothing to Patrick as all that he cares about is his own contract which has set him up for life. All the conversation about the highest-paid QBs means nothing to him. “When I signed my deal, I knew I was going to be pretty set for life, regardless of what the market kind of happens but you just keep playing. Money is one thing, but when you get those Super Bowl rings, at the end of your career, I think that’s going to be what you look back upon. I think I’ve made enough money from the football field and obviously off of it as well, that it won’t matter at the end of the day. The next guy is the top-paid guy,” Mahomes concludes.
The quarterback is right, as that appears to be the case now, as and when the most experienced veteran QBs and talented younger QBs come to the end of their contracts, they get massive extensions. Teams are battling with one another when it comes to offering top money to quarterbacks. Mahomes does not have a contract to sign anytime soon but it will be interesting to see what condition the market will be in 10 years down the road.
