The New England Patriots-Miami Dolphins Week 2 game was marred by a somber incident. A fight broke out in the stands during the game that saw lifelong Patriots fan Dale Mooney lose his life after being punched by a Dolphins fan. The incident happened at the top tier of Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, home of the Patriots. Mooney was taken to the hospital after the incident, where he was pronounced dead by the doctors.

The Norfolk County District Attorney’s Office said on Monday that Mooney had suffered a “medical issue” and not a “traumatic injury.” As a result, the exact cause of death is still undetermined, with the DA’s office saying that additional testing is needed. Mooney is expected to be cremated in a private ceremony on Tuesday, according to the NY Post.

Mooney will be laid to rest in a Mac Jones jersey. The Messenger reported that during the visiting hours at Kent & Pelczar Funeral Home & Crematory on Monday, Mooney was wearing a Mac Jones jersey. A Patriots flag also flew over the funeral home in his hometown of Newmarket, New Hampshire. It was in honor of the long-time ticket holder.

“I just can’t even believe this is for real. I want to know what happened. What caused this?” Mooney’s wife, Lisa said about her husband’s death. The stadium officials released a statement saying, “We continue to work with local authorities to assist them with their ongoing investigation, we extend our sincerest sympathies and heartfelt condolences to Dale’s family and to all those who are mourning his loss.” The Patriots lost the game that night against the Dolphins, 24-17.

Witnesses describe the fight involving Dale Mooney as ‘heartbreaking’

Dale Mooney, a longtime New England Patriots fan tragically lost his life after being involved in a fight with a Miami Dolphins fan. It happened during the Patriots-Dolphins game on September 18. Mooney was rushed to the hospital and was later pronounced dead by the doctors.

The fight had a lot of witnesses as it happened in a packed Gillette Stadium in Foxborough. People who saw the fight describe the scene as ‘heartbreaking’ and ‘brutal.’ “It was really one punch that I saw and the victim got punched really hard on the side of the head, and went down. He’s a bigger guy but he just crumbled,” one witnessed said.

“It was pretty heartbreaking and the game was still going on so the general public clearly knew what was going on in our section so the game was going on, people are cheering for the Patriots comeback, and this poor guy has passed away before our eyes. It was pretty brutal to watch.” the witness further continued.

Mooney will be laid to rest on Tuesday in a Mac Jones jersey. The funeral home also had a Patriots flag flying above in honor of the team’s lifelong ticket holder. The Patriots stadium officials released a statement extending their ‘sympathies and heartfelt condolences’ to the Mooney family.
