New England Patriots lost to the Las Vegas Raiders 30-24 in the most comical way possible. The Patriots had the ball when the clock hit the zeros and they still lost the game trying to throw laterals.
The Patriots wide receiver Jakobi Meyers threw a lateral to Mac Jones near midfield, which was intercepted by the Raiders edge rusher Chandler Jones who ran over Mac Jones and scored a touchdown, which gave the Raiders the victory. It took a minute for some people to process what actually happened. Moreover, New England fans were understandably pissed at their team for the catastrophic play.
The Patriots’ team was receiving criticism from every single corner. Even the Patriots radio announcers were in disbelief at what they saw during that last-minute play. During the live play-by-play commentary, the Patriots announcer didn’t mince his words when he said that this patriots team might be one of the dumbest teams he’s ever seen.
While calling this 7-7 Patriots team dumb might be a bit of an overstatement, calling that play thinking it will work might be one of the dumbest calls in the history of the NFL.
Patriots player takes responsibility
After losing to the Raiders in a comical way because of a mistake, Patriots wide receiver Jakobi Meyers has taken full accountability for it and also specifies that the play didn’t call for a lateral.
Jakobi Meyers told the media that he was trying to do too much and trying to be a hero. He admitted that he should’ve just gone down with the ball instead of trying to lateral it to his quarterback, Mac Jones. “Just trying to do too much. Trying to be a hero, I guess,” said Meyers. “I ain’t see dude back there, tried throwing the ball. I just was doing too much, I should’ve went down with the ball.
In addition to Meyers, the HC Bill Belichick also believes mistakes were made but didn’t point any fingers when asked about the play in a press conference. “Yeah, we need to try to eliminate all of the mistakes that we made. All of us,” he said.
The New England Patriots are already out of the AFC East Division title race, but they will look to make it to the post-season by securing a wild card spot in the AFC playoffs picture, which given their schedule will be a tough task to do.
