Lamar Jackson and the Ravens failed to reach a middle ground on a long-term deal since the All-Pro QB is reportedly expecting a fully guaranteed deal on the pay range of the Browns QB Deshaun Watson. In fact, no team in the league is willing to give Jackson the contract he asks for due to injury concerns. Amidst this situation, the former Seahawks CB Richard Sherman has blamed Patrick Mahomes and Josh Allen for not getting a big deal.
During a recent episode of his show The Richard Sherman Podcast, the former Super Bowl champion claims that Mahomes and Allen settled for a less value contract instead of asking for a fully guaranteed deal like the Vikings QB Kirk Cousins.
“What pissed me off is when Kirk Cousins got his guaranteed deal, I thought quarterbacks from then on were gonna be like, ‘If it ain’t guaranteed, I ain’t taking it,’” he said on The Richard Sherman Podcast.“Then [Patrick] Mahomes took that bs deal — just 10 years and wanted it to look like half a [billion]. … But when he didn’t set it, then Josh Allen didn’t set it, now Lamar [Jackson]’s trying to set it after Deshaun [Watson]’s already set it. And [team owners] are like, ‘Nah. We ain’t letting that go.'”
In 2020, the Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes signed a 10-year $450 million contract including $141 million in total guarantees. Furthermore, In 2021, the Bills QB Josh Allen signed a 6-year deal worth up o $258 million with $100 million fully guaranteed money.
Lamar Jackson reportedly got a similar kind of deal from as the Ravens offered him a 4-year $200 million deal with $133 million guaranteed but the former league MVP rejected that offer.
Social media rips Richard Sherman for blaming Patrick Mahomes and Josh Allen
Fans on social media were not happy with the former Seahawks CB blaming the Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes and the Bills QB Josh Allen for the Ravens QB Lamar Jackson’s contract extension fiasco.
Many people believe that Jackson is in the wrong for asking for a bigger deal but Richard Sherman defends his decision. Besides, Sherman wants the fans to keep the same energy when the Bengals QB Joe Burrow asks for a bigger deal when his time comes.
Nevertheless, the QB contracts in recent times including Deshaun Watson and Kyler Murray indicate there will always be a huge demand for QBs in the league. The Chiefs and the Bills got lucky with Mahomes and Allen who are willing to sign reasonable contracts so that their team can afford some other star players besides them.
